Description
I body,,so that slits 7 are provided at the ends JAMES SEARLE CRATE, or OAKI-IURST, TEXAS.
FOLDING BOX-FORM.
Application filed September 18, 191-7. Serial No. 192,032.
To all whom it ma concern:
' Be it known tiat I, JAMES S. CRATE, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakhurst, in the county of San J acinto and State of Texas, haveinvented a new and Improved Folding Box-Form, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a form for making boxesfrom corrugated board or the like,
and has for its general object to provide aform orpattern which is so designed as to enable a box blank to be easily and quickly cut out in such a manner'that it can be readily folded into the desired shape.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a form composed of a plurality of sections hingedly connected together so that the form can be conveniently handled or stored away, there being slits between the ends of the sections to enable the blank to be slit at these points to form the end flaps of the box, and, if desired, one of'the sections may have a stencil, whereby the proprietor orfirm name may be printed on the box blank. Separate forms will be required for different sized boxes and each form may have its box size stamped thereon. WVith such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claim appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference in-. dicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the form i open condition and ready for use;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2, Fig. 1; and I Fig. 3 is a plan view of the box blank with an intermediate portion'broken away. Referring to the drawing, 1 '2, 3, 4t and 5 designate the sections ofwhich the form is constructed, and these sections are preferably connected together in the order mentioned, by hinges 6. The sections 1 to 4t inclusive constitute a rectangular body and the hinges 6 extend short of the edges of the of each hinge. The section 5 is of the same length as its hinge. 1

"In using the form the same is placed on a piece of corrugated board or other stock sections 2and 3 and pressed into the corrugated board, whereby the form is held from and it isfirmlyanclmred thereto by means.
of pierclng pointsS stamped out from the shifting on the latter. A'knife is run around the entire periphery of the form and into the slots 7 whereby the blank A' shown. in
Fig. '3 is produced. This blank is composed of sections 1, 2 3 4 and 5, with slits 9 at theends of the lines of fold 10. Bymeans of these slits the portions between the slits form tabs 11 whiclrare'adapted to be bent on the longitudinal fold lines 12. The box blank is first folded along. the lines 10, which will bring the section 5 in folding relation to the section 1 The end flaps 11 are. then folded in so as to close the ends of the box.
A wrapper, string or gummed tape may then be employed condition.
to hold'the box infolded It may be desirable'to stencil the pro:
prietors name on the blank and for this purpose stencil letters 13 are cut in the form,
as shown in Fig. 1. V
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the-art to'which,
the invention'appertains, and. while I have described the principle of operation, to-
'gether with the articlewhich now-con;- sider to be thebest embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that thearticle shown is merely illustrative and that such changes maybe made when desired as fall.
withinthe scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described {my invention, I claim as new and desire to Patent A box-making form comprising four rectangular sectlons,
plate like oblong, hinges respectively connecting thelongitudinal edges of adjacent sections and of such length that cut-guiding slits are pro vided between adjacent-.sections-at the end ofeach hinge, said hinges being parallel, a
fifth shorter platelike section, and a hinge connecting the fifth section with the outer edge of one. of the outermost sections.
