Be it known that we, CLARENCE M. HEN- nnnsoN and Eooxn Coons, citizens of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the 1 county of Alameda and State of California,

pieces adapted to stand vertically when the bed is in its horizontal position and guided members slidable in the sockets, so that when the bed is in a horizontal position these leg members are held in proper supporting position. When the bed is turned up these leg members will slide out from the sockets and will then turn to right angles as the bed is brought into its vertical position. a

The invention also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bed extended in full lines and turned up in dotted lines.

The object of our invention is to provide a convenient and substantially automatically operating leg frame, which is adapted to support the foot of the bed, when extended, and which is foldable to lie parallel with the bed frame when the latter is turned up into its vertical position; the movements of the leg frame being substantially automatic and needing no special attention.

As shown in the drawings, A represents the side rails of a bed, pivoted at 2 and ca-- pable of being turned up into a vertical position, as shown in dotted lines, in which position the leg supports 9 hang parallel with the side rails of the bed. When ex- Specification of Letters Patent.

tended, these legs hang in a vertical position, resting upon the floor and supporting the outer end of the bed.

The construction of this portion of the bed, in detail, is as follows: it and 4 are the two semicircular halves of a socket-piece which are designed. to lit together and be seecured by a bolt 5 passing through the upper part. The segment 4- is here shown as being cast with the bracket 6 to which the bed rail A is secured. The segment i has formed with it a socket for the extension rail '7 which unites this leg with the corresponding leg at the other side of the foot of the bed.

8 represents the upward extension of the foot of the bed, and 9 is an elongated plug which is slidable in the socket piece i'i This plug has grooves 10 formed upon opposits sides and the socket piece has corresponding projections or lugs, as at 11, upon which the grooves 10 are slidable to extend or shorten the legs. The lower end of the plug 9 is here shown as enlarged, as at 9, and 9 is a tubular foot-piece which forms the continuation of the plug and has a foot adapted to rest upon the floor when the bed is extended.

The operation of this portion of the bed will be as follows: When the bed stands in its vertical position out of use the legs 9 will hang parallel with the side rail A. In this position the grooves 10 in the plug 9 will slide upon the pins 11 of the socket 4. until the pins are located in the upper closed ends of the grooves. The n per end of this plug is made hemispherical and its curvature is concentric with the curvature of the upper ends of the grooves 10, sothat the foot portion having dropped down until the pins 11, at each side are in the head of the plug 9, the latter and the legs will turn so as to fall into the position shown in Fig. 1; the sockets at being grooved or channeled, as at 12, to allow the legs to take this position.

lVhen the bed is opened out and the rails A are moved into horizontal position, the legs will turn upon the pivot pins 11 and the plug will have moved out of the groove in the socket piece so as to stand in proper alinement to rest upon the floor when the legs and prevent them from being pushed to one side or the other, the socket piece serving as a guide for the legs. 7

The lower portion 9 of the le 's is tubular, as previously described, and tting over the enlarged lower end 9 is secured thereto by means of indentations 13, on opposite sides of the plug, and a punch is used to correspondingly indent the tubular portion 9 into said indentations 13, as at 13*, thus locking them firmly thereto.

By this construction we provide legs for the outer or foot end of the bed which will be automatically turn-able into position to support said foot portion,'and being slidable into the socket, the upper part will be guided and stiffened by the socket so as to prevent any undesirable movement of the bed when in position. When the bed is raised this leg member will slide outward until the upper ends of the plug are in position to turn about the pivots in the socket portion and they will thus turn so that the foot will hang parallel with the side rails when the bed is in its upturned position.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis V In a foot support for a bed comprising two-part corner sockets each part being provided on its inner face with a pin and formed on its outer face with an integral bracket to which an end of the adjacent bed rail is secured, a bolt securing the parts of the socket together above the pins, a plug in each socket provided with grooves to receive slidably the pins, the upper end of each plugbeing rounded concentric with the upper ends of the grooves, the lower ends of the grooves being closed by a shoulder adapted to abut the lower end of the respective socket, and a foot extension carried by the shoulder of each plug.
