Be it known that I, MARVIN L. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of \Vebb City, Jasper county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Stool and Foot-Rest, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in stools for shoe salesmen, the object of my invention being to construct a stool provided with a folding foot rest and to provide means which will automatically extend the foot rest when the seat of the stool is depressed and further to provide means for locking the foot rest in either an extended or folded position which means holds the stool seat in either an elevated or depressed position.

For the above purposes my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinatt'ter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated i1 the acconipanying drawings: in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a complete stool and foot rest showing the stool seat in an elevated position and the foot rest in a lowered or folded position; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the stool seat in a depressed position and the foot rest extended as required for use; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the complete stool and foot rest in the position shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of the complete stool in the position shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the stool seat and foot rest in positions shown in Fig. 2; and, Fig. 6 is a sectional plan taken on the line 66 of Fig. t showing a portion only of the arms for supporting the foot rest.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: 1 designates the base section which preferably comprises an annular sleeve or collar having supporting legs and 2 designates a column having a reduced portion 8 which is embraced by the base 1, the downward movement of the column relative to the base being prevented by the shoulder l. An opening 5 is formed longitudinally through the column 2 to receive the stem 6 and carried by the stem 6 is a seat 7. A second opening 8 is formed through the column 2 parallel and communicating with Specification of Letters Patent.

A laterally projecting pin 9 is carried by the stem 6 adjacent its lower end, which projects into the opening 8 and is embraced by the one end of a contractile coil spring 10 and the opposite end of the spring is secured to the column 2 within and adjacent the upper end of the opening 8, the normal tendency of which spring is to hold the seat 7 in an elevated position.

Formed in the stem 6 diametrically opposite each other are two horizontally disposed notches 11 arranged adjacent the longitudinal center of the stem. Fixed to the upper face of the colunan 2 arranged to engage in the notches 11 is a pair of spring actuated detents 12 which are pivotally connected with each other to prevent a downward movement of the seat 7 and stem 6.

Formed in the column 2 communicating with the opening 5 and diametrically opposed to each other are the slots 13 arranged to permit travel of the pin 14 which is inserted through the stem 6 at right angles thereto and projects beyond the sides of the column 2. Secured to each end of the pin 14 is an arm 15 the outer or free ends of which are pivotally secured to the bracket 16 on the rear face of the foot rest 17. 1. second pin 18 is secured to the column 2 adjacent its upper end, and, to the ends of the pin :18, projecting beyond the faces of the column, are pivotally secured a pair of arms 19 which are bent adjacent their longitudinal centers and secured to the upper portion of the foot rest 17.

Formed in the face of the column 2 is a depression 20 arranged to permit movement of the catch 21 which is arranged to receive and hold the projecting rear end 22 of the arm 15.

It is obvious by the construction of my combined stool and foot rest that the same when folded will occupy a minimum of space and that when it is desired to employ the device, that the salesman places the device in position adjacent a seat occupied by a customer employing the seat 7 as a stool for himself. If it be desired then to extend the foot rest to a position for use, the operator grasps the outer ends of the detents 12 and presses them inwardly toward each other against the tension of the spring between them, thus freeing the opposite ends of the detents from the notches 11 formed in the stem 6. The seat then is depressed by gravity against the tension of the spring 10 and when the seat has reached its downward limit of movement the projecting ends 22 of the arms 15 are engaged and held by the catch 21 thus holding the seat downwardly against the tension of the spring 10 and the foot rest 17 in its extended position. If, after using the stool and foot rest, it be desired to again fold the rest relative to the stool, the catch 21 is depressed thus freeing the end 22 of the arm 15, then by reason of the spring 10, the stem (3 and seat 7 are eleated, which movement by reason of the arms 19 and 15 brings the foot rest 17 to a position approximately vertical and under the seat 7, such elevated position of the stool and folded position of the foot rest being maintained by the detents 12 engaging with the notches 11.

I claim:

1. In a combined stool and foot rest, a column, a stem supported in said column, a seat carried by said stem, a foot rest pivotally secured to the column and means whereby, when the seat is moved altitudinally, the foot rest will be either extended outwardly or toward the column.

2. In a combined stool and foot rest, a support, a stem carried by the support, a seat carried by the stem, a spring acting on said stem, a foot rest pivoted to the support, means connecting the stem and foot rest whereby when the stool is depressed the foot rest will be automatically extended and means for locking the foot rest in said extended position.

3. In a combined stool and foot rest, a support, a stem carried by said support, a seat carried by the stem, a foot rest pivotally secured to the support, arms connecting said support and stem, means for locking the stem in an elevated position, means for looking the foot rest in an extended position and a spring which when released will elevate the seat and at the same time fold the foot rest.

4. In a combined stool and foot rest, a base section, a column supported by said base section, there being an opening formed longitudinally through the column, a stem embraced by said opening, a seat carried by said stem, a spring for elevating the seat, means for holding the seat in an elevated position, a foot rest, arms secured to the foot rest pivoted to said column, a pair of arms secured at their one end to the stem and at their opposite end to the foot rest and a catch for engagement with one of said arms to hold the foot rest in an extended position.

5. In a combined stool and foot rest, a base section, a column supported by said base section, there being parallel openings formed longitudinally through said column, a stem embraced by one of said openings, a seat carried by said stem, a spring occupying the second opening fixed at its one end to said stem and at its opposite end to the support, there being slots formed in the column communicating with the longitudinal opening occupied by the stem, a pin carried by said stem arranged for travel in said slots, a foot rest, means for pivotally connecting the foot rest to the column, arms pivoted at their one end to the foot rest and at their opposite end to said pin, means for holding the seat elevated and the foot rest'folded and means for locking the foot rest when it is extended. 7
