' STOVEPIPE-LOGK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29,1917.
Applieationfiled February 28, 1917. Serial No. 151,492.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I EDWARD C. HENRY, a citizen of the United tates, residing at Missoula, in the county of Missoula and, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a stove pipe lock and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, which may be readily applied to an ordinary type of stove pipe and which will readily engage the line of a chimney to retain the stove pipe within the flue opening of the chimney.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a wire having means upon one end for connecting it to a stove pipe and having its opposite end bent to form a hook for engagement with the wall of the flue of a chimney to prevent the stove pipe from becoming accidentally detached from the flue opening.
A further object of this invention is the provision of the wire having its end, which is remote from the hook bent to extend through an opening in the stove pipe and having means thereon, which will prevent it from being withdrawn through the opening, thus preventing the device from becoming accidentally detached from the stove ipe.
p A further object of this invention is the provision of means for permitting the wire to be moved downwardly within the stove pipe so as to permit the hook to be engaged or disengaged from the wall of the flue of the chimney.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a stove pipe lock of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the fol1owpipe and chimney, which latter is shown in vertical section,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device removed from the stove pipe and chimney.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a chimney having the usual stove pipe opening 2 which permits the stove pipe 3 to communicate with the flue of the chimney. A wire 4 has one end bent to form a hook 5, which is adapted to engage the wall of the flue of the chimney as illustrated in Fig. 1, while the opposite end of the wire is disposed within the stove pipe 3. The last named end of the wire 4 is bent at right angles as shown at 5, the end of which is bent downwardly and outwardly in an in clined plane as shown at 6 to form an apex portion 7 which is adapted to engage or bear against the inner wall of the stove pipe as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The end of the extension 6 is bent upwardly to form a vertical extension 8 which is adapted to be inserted through an opening 9 in the stove pipe 3 and has its uppermost end bifurcated between which is pivoted a locking lever 10. The locking lever 10 when the vertical extension 8 is being inserted through the opening 9 of the stove pipe 3 is disposed between the bifurcated end thereof and after the extension 8 has been inserted through the opening 9, the locking lever 10 is swung at right angles thereto.
- A pair of washers 11 are positioned upon the extension 8 between the stove pipe-and the locking lever 10 in spaced relation and have interposed therebetween a coiled spring 12, which surrounds the extension 8 and which will permit the extension 8 to be moved downwardly and upwardly within the opening 9 of the stove pipe, so that the hook end 5 may be engaged and disengaged from the wall of the flue of the chimney 1 when desired.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
it will be noted that a simple and compact article has been provided, which will readily and efliciently secure a stove pipe within the flue opening of a chimney. If desired, a wire or tie may be connected to the portion 5 of the wire 4 and extend exteriorly over the Stovepipe tote netted to tee a e object for further tying the stove pipe 111 the chimney. The lOCklIlg lever 10 is provided with an aperture in the end thereof to which a wire or tie may be connected for the purpose of further tying the pipe within the chimney. The last named tie after be ing connected with the locking lever is 'con nected to some permanent object. l
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement isposed within the ing the apex portion thereof disposed against the, inner face of the wall of the stove pipe, the free end of the V-shaped portion being bent at right angles and extending' through the opening of the stove pipe, the last named end forming 'an anchoring extension having the free end thereof bifurcated, a locking lever pivoted within the bifurcated end and adapted to be swung at right angles thereto, a pair of relatively spaced washers mounted 'upon the last named end and disposed between the stove pipe and locking lever, and a coiled spring interposed between the washers to permit the wire to be moved downwardly within the stove pipe to. free its first named end from engagement with the chimney.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
