STOVEPIPE VBNTILATOR.

qvilineaou I v d/mfm/ UNITED STATES Patented November 1, 1904.
PATENT QFFICE.
FRANK W. FARRINGTON AND GEORGE O. TUCKER, OF MASSILLON, OHIO.
STOVEPIPE-VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,723, dated November 1, 1904.
Application filed April 1, 1904:. Serial No. 201,158- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that we, FRANK W. EARRING- TON and GEORGE O. TUCKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Massillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon.
The object of the present invention is to provide a ventilator that will remove escaping gas from a room and at the same time carry from the room any contamination contained in the air, or, in other words, it acts to purify and keep the air in a sanitary condition.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View showing the invention properly applied or attached to a pipe leading from a gas-stove.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the ventilator.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawmgs.
1 represents a pipe which may be of any desired construction and forms no particular part of the present invention except that it' is to be applied to a Stovepipe.
The Stovepipe proper is provided with the aperture 2, and directly under the aperture is located the plate 3, which plate is bent or curved so that it will fit the curvature of the pipe. Upon the plate 3 is located the ashestos disk 4, which asbestos disk is substantially of the form of the plate 3 and is designed to come in contact with the pipe 1 at the point where the ventilator is to be attached.
The plate 3 is provided upon one side with the upwardly-curved extension 5, which upwardly-curved extension is provided with the slot or opening 6. From the opposite side of the plate 3 extends the connecting band or clip 7, which clip or band is formed of sufficient length to be extended around the pipe 1 and connected to the upwardly-curved arm 5 by placing the free end of said band through the slot 6 and bending a portion of the clip or band extending through the slot so as to form a hook, by which arrangement the ventilator proper is connected to the pipe 1.
To the plate 3 is attached the funnel-shaped pendant 8, which funnel-shaped pendant is open at its bottom or lower end, and the funnel-shaped pendant communicates with the Stovepipe 1 through the opening 2, it being understood that an opening is to be formed in the asbestos disk 4.
The present invention is more particularly applicable to use for gas stoves and heaters, and we have illustrated the invention applied to a gas-stove, which stove is represented in outline; but of course the stove 9 here shown may be of any desired form or kind.
It will be readily seen that if from any cause gas escapes into the room it will be drawn into the pipe 1 and outward through the chimney, thereby preventing any danger of persons becoming asphyxiated.
It will be understood that by providing the asbestos disk 4L and locating the same against the pipe 1 and around the aperture 2 the draft will be direct through the funnel-shaped pendant 8, owing to the fact that a. close contact will be maintained between the plate 3 and the pipe and asbestos disk acting as a cushion or gasket. 1
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
In a ventilator of the class described, a funnel-shaped pendant provided with a plate at its upper end, said plate provided with an asbestos disk, said plate and asbestos disk provided with an opening, a pipe provided with an opening registering with the openings in the plate and asbestos disk, and a connecting clip or band located around the pipe, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our. names in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK W. FARRINGTON. GEORGE O. TUCKER. Witnesses: I
