THOMAS D. GARNER, JR., OF IBERIA, MISSOURI.
FLUE FOR SMOKE-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 515,427, dated February 27, 1894.
Application led October 30, 1893.
To OLZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS D. GAENEE, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing atl Iberia, in the county of Miller and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fines for Smoke-Pipes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters o:l reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in smoke lues for buildings, and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive iiue adapted for use as a substitute for chimneys in frame and other buildings.
The smoke pipe through which the products of combustion are conveyed isinclosed within a sheet metal casing of a sufticient diameter as to preclude the possibility of danger from fire in case of the overheating of the pipe; thus rendering the use of my flue advantageous in the construction of frame buildings, especially in localities in which the use ot' stone or brick is for any reason impracticable.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel features of construction, and in .the combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this specification, and in which drawings- Figure l isa perspective view of a portion of a flue constructed in accordance with my invention, with parts broken away, and Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the same.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter A designates the smoke pipe, through which the products of combustion are conveyed from either stove or furnace.
B represents a metallic casing surrounding the pipe and extending from the basement of Serial No. 489,560. (No model.)
with chimneys of ordinary construction; or, if desired the lower end of the casing may rest upon suitable support at any point within the building.
At intervals of the length of the casing, and at such points as may be convenient for attaching pipes leading from stoves or furnaces upon the several floors of the building, openings C, C are provided, within which openings are secured short pipe sections D communicating at their inner ends with the smoke pipe, as shown. These pipe sections D are, as it will be observed upon reference to the drawings attached at their inner ends tothe pipe within the casing while at their outer ends they are attached to the walls of the casing B, and said pipes thus serve both as convenient points of attachment for branch pipes, and also serve to securely brace and hold the inner pipe in place in the centerof the casing.
At the extreme upper end of the casing the metallic side walls are bent inward and the ends are protected by means of a metallic cap plate G which plate encircles the pipe. At the corners of the plate Gr openings H are provided which openings communicate directly with the inner chamber of the casing, and aiord au outlet for the heated air from within the casing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein described improvement in fines for smoke pipes, the same consisting of a metallic casing of greater diameter than and surrounding the smoke pipe, openings in the casing provided with branch pipes communieating with theinnerpipe and attached both to the pipe and casing; the side walls of the casing at their upper ends being folded inward as described, and the cap plate G encircling the pipe and resting upon and covering the folded ends, and having triangular openings at its corners, there being an opening around the smoke pipe between the same and the inturned ends of the casing substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
TOO
In testimony whereof vI affix my signature in
