H. M. PIOKERING.
STOVE PIPE.
Patented Jan. 20, 1885.
,, l llm I lllllllllll I ll I||||| NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY M. PIOKERING, OF HOLLISTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
STOVE-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,143, dated January 20, 1885.
Application filed May 10, 1884. (No model.)
I 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. PIOKERING, of Holliston, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stove- Pipes, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation representing my improved stove-pipe in use, and Figs. 2, and 3 vertical longitudinal sections of the pipe detached.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
In setting up ordinary base-burning or diving-flue stoves much difficulty is frequently experienced on account of the funnel-hole in the rear or standing pipe of the stove and that in the chimney varying in height, thus necessitating the use of a knee or bend in the funnel, and greatly increasing the expense of properly connecting the stove with the chimney.
My invention is designed to obviate this difficulty; and to that endlmake use of means which will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation, the extreme simplicity of theinvention rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawings, A represents the stove, B
the funnel, and O the back or standing pipe.-
This pipe is provided with an elongated slot, at, and is arranged vertically in parallelism with the body of the stove, its lower end resting on the base d, and its upper being connected to the stove by the short horizontallyarranged pipe at, having the damper o, in the any desired position. The flange m is of sufficient length to cover the slot at when the sleeve D is dropped to its fullest extent, the body of the sleeve being long enough to cover said slot when raised to the highest point, or so as to bring the shoulder h against the lower side of the pipe-collar Z on the pipe 0.
It will be obvious that my improvement will enable the pipe-collar z of the stove to be readily adjusted to correspond with the thimble or funnel-hole in the chimney, when said hole is arranged at any of the usual distances from the floorfor instance, from eighteen to thirty inches-and that, when the funnel-hole in the chimney is near the ceiling, necessitat ing the use of a vertical funnel, B, to make the connection, it will also greatly assist in properly coupling the pipe.
I am aware that a patent was granted to one Bell, March 12, 1861, No. 31,652, for an improvement in stove-pipes; but my invention is essentially different from his, and I do not, therefore. claim anything shown or described in said patent. In said patented pipe there is a box closed at both ends and fitted with flanges to receive a flanged pipe-collar. This box cannot be readily cleared of ashes and soot, is comparatively expensive to construct, and its flanges are liable to get bent and out of order, thereby preventing the collar from being readily adjusted. In my device the standing pipe of the stove is slotted and provided with a flanged sleeve, which is fitted to slide thereon in such a manner as to be retained by friction in any desired position, thereby enabling the eduction or chimney pipe to be readily adjusted vertically,
simplifying the'construction and rendering the apparatus less expensive and more durable.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. The pipe 0, provided with the pipe-collar Z and slot at, and the sleeve D, provided with the pipe-collar z and flange m, constructed, combined, and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The stove A, having the pipe 0, provided with the slot 00, in combination with a sleeve carrying a pipe-collaraud adapted to be adjusted vertically on said pipe, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Witnesses: HENRY M. PICKERING.
GEORGE K. MANNING, WILLIAM H. BELcHEn.
