HERBERT R. GRAVES, OF FITCHRURG,MASSACHUSETTS.
ADJUSTABLE COLLAR ATTACHMENT FOR STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,046, dated October 19. 1886.
Application tiled January 9, 1886.
T0 all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT It. GnAvEs, a citizen of' the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of Torcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and Improved Adjustable Collar Attachment forStoves; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which, in connection with the drawings, making a part oi' this specification, will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same.
My invention relates to stoves; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and operation of an adjustable collar attachment to be attached to the back side or pipe of a stove of any usual and well-known construction, and which connects with the stovepipe, which enters a hole in the chimney.
The object of my invention is to provide an 'adjustable collar, which may be adapted and applied to the back side or pipe of a stove for the purpose of enabling the stove to be always connected with the chimney by a straight stove-pipe, no mattei' at what height the hole in the chimney is, if it is in the lower part of the wall ofthe room.
By the use of my invention applied to a stove the same stove and a straight stovepipe may be used equally well in a room where the hole in the chimney is two feet from the floor, as in a room where the hole in the chimney is three feet from the floor, thus doing away with the necessity of providing bent elbow-pieces @for connecting a stove with the.
chimney whenever the collar of the stove does not come exactly or substantially opposite the hole in the chimney, as is required to be done with stoves having stationary collars, as now constructed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a view of the front side of my adjustable collar attachment, which faces toward the chimney, and is secured to the back side or pipe of a stove. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section on line A B, Fig. l, looking in the direction of arrow fr, same figure; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line C D, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of arrow y, same figure.
ln the accompanying drawings the part Serial No. 188,111. (No model.)
marked E represents the back pipe of a stove of any usual and well-known construction, a being the bottom thereof, where the smoke enters from the stove and passes up and out through the stove-pipe connected with the adjustable collar, and b being the top thereof, shown closed. Theback pipe, E, has its front side toward the chimney cut out, or else it is made open on this side, in order that my adjust-able collar attachment F may be secured to the projecting edges c c thereof by means oi' bolts d dor other equivalent means. The adjustable collar attachment F serves as a front side for the back pipe, E. It has the side pieces, e e, which are provided with parallel grooves ff, extending lengthwise in the same from the top to the bottom thereof. Said side pieces, e e, are bolted or secured to the projecting edges c c of the back pipe, E, as shown in Fig. 3. A top piece, g, and a bottom piece, h, are secured to the side pieces, e e, by means of bolts t' t' or other equivalent means. A stationary division, j, is secured in the top part of the collar attachment F, and also a stationary division, j, at the bottom part thereof.
Between the divisions j j are located in the grooves f f in succession the adjustable divisions or slides k k, Z Z, and m m, arranged to slide up and down in succession in said grooves f f, and connected together and moved up or down by means of the sliding collar-piece a, which has a collar, o, secured in the center part thereof, with which the pipe ruiming into the chimney is connected in any usual and well-known manner. The sliding collar-piece n is held in any desired position, so that the collar o will be at the upper part of the stove or at the lower part, according to the position of the hole in the chimney, by means of set-screws -r r', passing through projections s s, extending out from the sides e e of the collar attachment F. Each of the sliding divisions k, l, and m are provided with overlapping ears u at their ends, which serve to push or pull the slides in either direction, and at the same time to prevent the escape of smoke from between the top and bottoni edges of the slides. A projection, o, on 'the stationary divisions j j prevents the slides from being drawn too far in either direction. The sliding collar-piece /n has a projection, fw, at each end, which con- IOO nects with the ears or projections u on the slides m m.
I have shown in the drawings the collar 0 at the middle point between the top and bottom of the back pipe, E. It is raised higher by simply pushing up the sliding collar-piece n. This operation pushes up the upper set of 'slides'and draws out the lower set in succession, as will be readily understood from Fig. 2 of the drawings. By drawing down the sliding collar-piece n the lower set of slides will be pushed down and the upper set will bel drawn out in succession. Thus the position of the collar o may be adjusted up or dow-n on the back pipe of the stove in-eiher direction `as far as the slides will allow it to go, being it belongs, for my adjustable collar attachment may be attached to the back side or pipe of any stove, and lthe collar adj usted up or down, so that the stove can always be connected by a straight stove pipe with the hole in the chimney, no matter at what height the hole in the chimney may be, providing, of course, that it is in the lower part of the wall of the room, and not in the upperpart.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An adjustable collar attachment for stoves, composed of the two side pieces, e e,
each provided with two or more parallelV grooves, ff, extending lengthwise therein, for the purpose stated, in combinationl with two or more pairs of sliding plateslocated in said grooves in succession, and adapted to move up or down therein, and au adjustable slide provided with a collar, all constructed and operated substantially as set forth.
i 2. In an adjustable collar attachment for stoves, the combination, with the side pieces, c c, each provided with two or more parallel grooves, ff, extendinglengthwise therein, for
the purpose stated, and the stationary divisions j j at the top and bottom thereof, of two or more sets of movable slides, k k, ZZ, and m m,
located in said grooves in succession, and the adjustable sliding collar-piece n, all adapted to be moved up or down, and means for holding said collar-piece when adjusted, substantially as set forth.
