Description

(NoModeL) N. U. WALKER. Chimney Bonnet and Wind Guard.
No. 233,584. Patented Oct.19,1880..

UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
NATHAN U. WALKER, OF WELLSVILLE, OHIO.
CHIMNEY-BONNET AND WIND-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,584, dated October 19, 18 80,
Application filed September 3, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN U.WALKER, of Wellsville, in the county of Oolurnbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimney-Bonnets and Wind-Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a vertical section of two of my improved ventilating ohimney-bonnets, illustrating their position while being burned. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a chimney-bonnet with a movable wind-guard, and Fig. 3 is a similar View of a chimney-bonnet with a fixed windguard.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each. s
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and manner of use.
I form the bonnet a of plastic material in the usual way of making such articles, but with a seat or shoulder, b, at the upper end, and with a wind-guard, c, which is either fixed or movable. In case the wind-guard is fixed the seat 1) extends around outside of it, as shown in the lower part of Fig. 1 and by Fig. 3. In case the wind-guard is movable it rests upon the seat I) when in place, as shown in the upper part of Fig. l and in Fig. 2. The function of the seat I), besides furnishing a seat for the movable wind-guard, is to enable the bonnets a to be piled one upon the other in the kiln, and so economize room therein, and thereby save fuel. time, and labor in the burning operation. This is a large saving, as heretofore such articles had to be burned separately. 'lhe wind-guard 0, being closed at the top, prevents the wind from blowing or puffing down the chimney, while the openings 0 always create a draft in the tube a and prevent its clogging and choking up with soot. It also adds to the beauty of the chimney.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A chimney-bonnet provided with a seat or shoulder at its upper end, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A chimney-bonnet having a ventilating wind-guard closed at the top and provided with openings in its sides, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
NATHAN U. WALKER.
