STOVEPIPE-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 1912 Application filed July 27, 1911. Serial No. 640,850.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE F. COLLIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeville, in the county of Holmes and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to joints between stove pipes and chimneys, and has for its object to provide a simple, effective and convenient device of this character.
With the above object in view, this invention is embodied essentially in a member which passes through the opening in the chimney and engages the brick on the inner and outer faces of the chimney wall to retain the member in position, and which is provided on its outer end with means for engaging the member on the stove pipe which is inserted into the opening in the chimney.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fragmental portion of the chimney and stove pipe secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sect-ion taken through the joint. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the member which is secured to the chimney. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the member which is secured to the stove pipe.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 15 designates the chimney having the opening 6 therein, and 5, the section of stove pipe which is inserted through the opening 6 in the chimney. A bar of metal 11 passes through the opening 6, lying against the wall thereof, and has the inner end 12 thereof bent against the inner faceof the chimney and the outer end is bent against the outer face of the chimney as .indicated at 10 and is then bent backward to form a tongue 9 spaced from the portion 10 of the said member. The portions 10 and 12 prior to the attachment of the member 11 to the chimney are bent inwardly slightly to converge toward each other and in securing the members to the chimney, the same is insertclaim without departing ed into the opening in the chimney and the portions 10 and 12 are spreadto straddle the wall of the chimney to permit the members to bear against the wall of the opening, the inward tensions of the portions 10 and 12 retaining the memberin position. The stove pipe 5 has a strip of metal 7 riveted or otherwise secured thereto which has the inner end thereof bent angularly to form a lip 8. It is understood, however,'that the lip 8 may be secured to the stove pipe in any suitable manner.
After the member 11 has been inserted in position, the stove pipe 5 may be passed through the opening 6. The ear 8 forms a stop for preventing the stove pipe from being inserted too far into the chimney and by turning the pipe 5, the lip 8 can be turned to pass behind the tongue 9 of the member 11, thus preventing the longitudinal. displacement of the stove pipe and securing it in position. This member 11 having portions 10 and ner faces of the chimney, respectively, is held against longitudinal movement and the portions 10 and 12 bearing on the said faces of the chimney prevent the same from revolving. The stove pipe may be removed by turning the same to bring the lip 8 from behind the tongue 9, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the stove pipe is then free to be removed from the chimney.
This invention being simple in construction will render it inexpensive to manufacture, is effective in its use, and may readily be secured to the chimney, it being understood that this device may beapplied to pipes of all sizes and to various chimneys, and it is further understood that this de vice is capable of alteration in its details and form within the scope of the appended from the spirit of the invention.
-What is claimed as new is The combination with a chimney having an opening therein, of a member passing through the said opening formed of a strip of metal having angularly bent portions at the ends thereof having inward tensions to engage the outer and inner faces of the wall 12 engaging the outer and inmm m of the chimney and having a tongue bent as my own, I have hereto afiix ed my signaback from the outer end thereof, a stove pipe ture in the presence two Witnesses.
inserted throughlthe said opening, and a lip secured to the stove pipe adapted to pass 5 behindthe said tongue to secure the stove Witnesses:
pipe against longitudinal movement. R. R. STERLING,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing R. F. KERR.
