f f fr UNITED STATES LYMAN E. BALDWIN, OF LANDER, WYOMING.
s-rovEPlPEl ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,269, dated August 1, 1893. Application led March 30, 1893. Serial No. 468,325. (No model.)
y To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN EBALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lander,
ful Improvements in Attachments for Stovepipes; and I do declare the following to be al full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters ofl reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stove-pipe attachments, and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment whereby a stove-pipe may be secured in place `in a chimney, or two connecting lengths of pipe may be held against possible accidental displacement. v
The invention has for a further object the provision of means whereby the pipe may be locked at any desired point within the opening leading to the flue or chimney, and Whereby it maybe quickly andV easily released when it may be desired toremove the same.
To these ends and to such others as thein-y vention may pertain, the same consists in the novel features of construction, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a length of stove-pipe provided with myimprovement, the pipe being shown as inserted in a chimney flue, and portions broken away in order to more clearly illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the pipe with its attachment. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in perspective of the attachment, the same being shown as removed from the pipe.
Reference nowbeing had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates alength of stove-pipe, within which is placed a closely fitting band or collar B of sheet metal havin the county of Fremont andv State of- *Wyoming, have invented certain new and useing attached theretolupon opposite sides two spring arms C, C, said arms being at points near their free ends bent to form shoulders D,D. The said collarB is adaptedto be moved within the pipe,A so as to project the free ends of the arms C beyond the open end of the pipe, said movement being limited by lugs E, E upon the outer faces of the arms, which engage openings F in the pipe. It will be seen that by this arrangement the free ends of the spring arms may be readily forced inward, so as to permit the end of the pipe to be passed readily into thc chimney opening, by simply pressing inward upon the lugs E, and that when the pipe has been thus placed, it will be at once locked against possible accidental displacement bythe action of the spring arms, which when released by relieving the pressure upon the lugs E, will springoutward, causing the shoulders D to engage the inner wall of the chimney. The pipe may be` as readily removed, by simply depressing the springs by the action of the lugs.
It will be at once evident that the invention is equally well applied to locking together two connecting lengths of pipe, it being simply necessary to provide upon the inside of one of the pipe sections, suitable projections against which the shoulders D will bear when the spring arms are released.
The device is equally well adapted to the securing of either vertical or horizontal pipe sections.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination, a stove-pipe section, a metallic band or collar litted Within the pipe and provided with spring actuated arms having shoulders near their free ends and lugs upon the outer faces of the arms, said lugs being extended through openings in the pipe and serving as a means for compressing thesprings substantially as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LYMAN E. BALDWIN.
