Description

' navm n. BAILEY, or COFFEYVILLE, .minsns.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1917.
Application filed January 13, 1917. Serial NoL'142 ,249.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, DAVID D. BAILEY, a citizenof the United States, residing at Coffeyville, in the county of Montgomery and.
State of Kansas, have invented certain" new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had to the accompanying-drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in wearing apparel and relates particularly to neckwear.
The invention has for its primary ob ect to provide an improved article of this char acter which combines, in a very simple and effective manner, a combination of parts whereby the cravat may be worn as the ordinary ascot, four-in-hand, or bow-tie, or a part of it worn by itself as the ordinary string or bow-tie, and which possesses the additional advantages of making a new tie or cravat out of an old one by cutting off the end of the old tie and attaching one of my improved tie-ends to it.
And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this character so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and comblnations of parts that l[ shall hereinafter de scribe.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View showing one form of my improved necktie, the parts being separated and in juxtaposition to each other,
Fig. 2 is a similar View but with the parts in assembled relation,
Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary sectional views showing the arrangement of the fasteners.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followingdescrlption and designated in all of the views of the accompanyin drawing by like reference characters.
Iy improved combination tie or cravat comprises a tie-end 1 and a string or bow-tie 2. The tie-end 1 is formed at one end with a sheath or casing 3, which is preferably unpadded and designed toreceive one end of the string or bow-tie 2 separable fasteners 4: of any desired shape or design being secured to the tie-end 1 at the end of the v sheath 3 and to the string or bow-tie2 at suitable distances from one end thereof, this being the end which is inserted into the sheath,
Preferably I employ two separable fasteners for each tie or cravat, the complemental or mating members of the fasteners being connected to the opposite sides of the sheath 3 and bow-tie 2, andnear the side gdges thereof so as to avoid any bulky efect.
From this description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation and advantages of my improved combination tie or cravat will be apparent. The device may be used in three Ways. For example, when one end of the string or bowtie 2 is inserted into the sheath 3 and the parts connected together by the separable fasteners 4, a regular four-in-hand, ascot, or bow-tie is produced, and one which will not only be as strong and durable as the ordinary tie, but one which, when worn, cannot be told from the ordinary tie. By taking ofi' the tie-end 1 there remains an ordinary string or bow-tie, just as it comes from the store, with the exception, of course, of the fastening members, but these will not be in the way when the part 2 is worn. Furthere more, the invention may be employed in makin a new tie out of an old one by cutting o% the end of the old tie and attaching one of my tie-ends 1.
It will also be seen that the tie-end l itself possesses several advantages. In the first place, it is two ties in one, thereby saving material; the tie-end eliminates the necessity of padding the four-in-hand tie for the reason that the bow-tie 2 acts as padding for the four-in-hand when the parts are joined; and the two parts may be of the same material or of different materials or designs and any end can be used on any bow-tie without detection from the outside when the device is worn.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what ll believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention,'it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the. invention as claimed.
What is claimed, is:
As a .new article of manufacture, the fasteners and the adjacent end of the string 10 herein described cravat, comprising a tietie, lying within the sheath, will ,eonstitute end provided at one end with a sheath, and a padding for the tie-end. I a complete string tie insertible at one end in In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my said sheath,- the sheath being unpadded, and signature in the presence of two witnesses. separable fasteners attached to said sheath DAVID D. BAILEY.
' at one end thereof and the string tie at a Witnesses:
distance from one end of the latter, whereby F. A. CoRDELL, that portion of the string tie between said ARLINE M. WALTON.
