Description
VEDWI'N v.- WHITAKER.
Improvement in Gloves.
UNITED STATES EDWIN V. WHITAKER, OF GLOV'ERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVES.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,091, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, EDWIN V. WHITAKER, of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gloves and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming partv of this specification, in which Figure is a view of back of glove made up; Fig. 2, view of front piece spread out; and Fig. 3, view of back piece spread out. Fig. 4 is a view of the thumb piece spread out.
The object of my invention is to produce a glove having a peculiar curve or swell at the wrist with a minimum waste of material and expenditure of labor in making up. The glove is composed of three parts, and 1 cut both the palm and back piece as nearly rectangular as possible, and yet with a curve from thefingers backward toward the wrist, so as to impart the requisite shape, as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, a is the back piece; I), the palm piece; '0, the laps of the palm piece over the back; 01, the seamsbetween the palm and back pieces. From the inside of the tips of the first and fourth fingersthe seams d run straight to the points 6 without forchettes. I am aware that it is not new to cut the edges of glove pieces without forchettes; but this has not been done, so far as I know, in the case of a glove made in three pieces; and in cutting skins for gloves of the latter class greater economy of stufi can be secured than when each glove is made of a single piece. The flare of the back a on each side from c to f is given so as to make the glove accommodate itself more closelyto the shape of the wrist. The form of the thumb" piece h is clearly shown in Fig. 4. By brin gin gtogether and unitingits side edges 1' t it is in condition to be united to the palm piece by sewing its base edge K to the edge of the opening therein, as shown in Fig. 2.
I desire it to be understood that I lay no claim to a glove made in three parts, nor with an overlapping palm piece;. but
I do claim as of my invention The glove herein described, having its back and palm pieces a and I) cut with the straight and curved edges, as shown, for the purpose specified. To the above specification of my invention I have signed-my name this 12th day of 0.;tober, A. D. 1871.
Witnesses: E. V. WHITAKER.
