SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,487, dated September 2, 1884.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL BAKER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Covered Mittens; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My present invention has general reference to covered mittens, driving-gloves, and similar garments; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of constructon as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings already mentioned, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure l is a back and Fig. 2 a front view of my improved covered mittens Fig. 3 is a plan of the blank or piece for the covering. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are similar views showing the appearance of said covering in the different stages of manipulation previous to applying said covering to the mitten.

Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.

The object of my present invention is, essentially, the production of a leather covering-for a cloth or similar mitten, such cover ing being preferably produced from one piece of leather. To attain this result I cut the said covering to the shape substantially as illustrated in Fig. 3, where 0 represents the covering entire; a a, the two semicircular portions forming the tip of the mitten; c c, the tip of the thumb-piece D, (Figs. 1 and 2;) b, that portion of the thumb which is sewed to the body portion 5 g, the line of folding of the front and back portions, and ethe line of folding of the thumb, and f the line of folding of the front and back piece of the thumb.

In cutting this covering I sever the blank 0 along the line at b to the point 6, so that the portion a, Fig. 3, may bev folded upon the similar portion a along the line 9, and so that the blank appears as shown in Fig. 4. Now I fold the right hand (or left hand) portion of the thumb along the line 6, Figs. 3 and 4, so that the position of the thumb portion is reversed, and occupies the position shown in Fig. 5. the thumb-piece along the line f, Fig. 5, when the covering will appear substantially as illustrated in Fig. 6, and be ready for sewing along the several lines of seaming, after which the said covering is applied to the mitten B and stitched thereto in an obvious manner, the portion 0. having the triangular cut forming the back portion of the covering.

Heretofore the facing for the mittens has come by making the covering or facing from one piece of leather of the contour shown, whereby but one die is required for cutting the facing in but one operation, thus saving from two to five hundred per oentum of the labor heretofore expended in cutting, besides having less seams to make, less thread to use, and less opportunity for ripping of seams, because there are a less number of them.

It is perfectly obvious that the mitten may be either cloth, knit fabric, or any other material, and that the covering or facing, although preferably made' of leather, may be made from. any desirable material without changing the nature of my invention. So may,

instead of cutting the facing in one piece, thesame be made in two pieces by cutting along the folding-line e and sewing the parts together along said line 6 after reversing their position, as heretofore described. This would be an equivalent for my single-piece covering and involve the additional labor of sewing the parts together.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States A facing for a mitten, consisting of the blank 0, having the portions a a, o c, and b, as stated, said portions being adapted to be folded along the lines 6, g, and f, as and for the purpose stated.
