IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,008, dated December 22, 1874; application filed August 7, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMUND B. WHITNEY, of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had i to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in the class of gloves made partly of leather or dressed skin and partly of woven fabric; and consists in so forming the patterns that the entire front of the hand and the lower half and outer edges of the upper half of the backs of the fingers may be cut from leather or skin, While the wrist, back of the hand, and upper central portions of the fingers are out from Woven fabric or other different material.

I will proceed to explain my invention, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 represents the pattern of the cloth back; Figs. 2 and 3, the patterns of the leather portions of the backs of the two middle fingers; Fig. 4., the pattern of the leather portion of back of little finger and side strip; Fig. 5, the pattern of the front of glove and leather portion of back of forefinger; Fig. 6, back of glove made by my patterns.

As I claim nothing here in the manner of cutting the front and thumb, and as they may be cut by well-known patterns, which any person acquainted with the manufacture of gloves will understand how to apply, I will not particularly refer to them in the following description.

leather portions of the backs of the fingers are to be stitched to the parts a a a a. Said leather portions are represented by 2 and 3 for the two middle fingers, 4 for the forefinger, and 5 for the little finger, the open spaces :0 as a a: being occupied by parts it a a a, as shown in Fig. 6. These parts an a a only extend about to the middle or second joints of the fingers, and lap under the lower and side leather portions just sufficiently to admit of the two portions being firmly joined together by one or more rows of stitching, being thus conspicuously distinguished from gloves which merely have their finger tips and sides re-enforced by a narrow strip of leather, which necessitates the stitching together of three thicknesses of materials at the tips and along the sides of the fingers, which method effectually prevents a neat fit, and causes wrinkles in one of the materials when the other shrinks by becoming wet, or by unequal shrinkage of the two materials.

In my glove only two thicknesses of material are stitched together in joining the parts which form the fingers.

The leather of the forefinger is folded so that part 1) comes on the back, and the leather portions of the different fingers are stitched together where they meet in the crotches. The part c of the leather portion of the little finger runs up the back edge of the cloth to the wrist-piece, and its outer edge is stitched to the back edge of the front of the glove.

In order to utilize fragments of skin or leather, which would otherwise be wasted, the leather portions of the backs of the fingers may be out in sections, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, and stitched together, 7 showing three sections apart, and Fig. 8 showing them stitched together.

I am aware of the patent granted to John L. Whitten, May 31, 1870, and numbered 103,696, and I hereby disclaim the invention described therein; but

I do claim- A glove composed of pattern 1, having the half finger-pieces a a a affront pattern 5, and the intermediate pieces or patterns 2, 3, and 4, all combined and arranged substantially as described and shown, for the purpose specified.
