JOHN H. PUTMAN, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
Leners Patent No. 101,506, zetelt/1pm 5, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent vand making part 0f T116 lame.
To whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, J 03N H. PUTMAN, ofGloversville, vin the .county of Fulton, iu the State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Gloves,
and fingers;
'Figure 2an outline of the inside or vpalm-piece of the glove, and the thumb-piece and fingers in one piece'- Y Fignre 3,`an outline of the back' of the glove, the
thumb-piece that covers the back of the thumb and' backsfof the lingers;
Figure 4, an outline of the piece that forms the sides "of the iingers, technically called fourchette and v Figure 5 is a section of the back of the thumb in perspective. i In the manufacture of gloves, it is an object to have `as few seams therein as possible, which necessitates the cutting the glove from the skin of which it is made in as few pieces, in such shape as will fit the hand,
without waste of material, and so as to have the few seams so located that `the will not come upon them.
Gloves have been cut having the inside of the thumb on the piece that forms the inside of the hand part-'of the glove, bntsnch gloves have had the thumb-piecesy cut narrow at their bases, bringing the seams in such position as to receive most of the wear, and make a bad tit ou the hand, and to obviate such difficulties is the` object of this invention; and
It consists in the form or shape of the-pieces from which the glove is made.-
A represents the piece cut to form the back of the hand.
A', the back of the thumb, and having an angular projecting piece or gusset, a, on its side.
vl ',b the backs of the fingers.
B, the piece that forms the inside or palm of the glove.
B', the inside of the thumb, and cut from the same piece, and has an angular projection or gusset,- a, on its side. Y
b' b'," the inside of the ngers.
c, the piece that forms the sides between the iingers.
greatest amount of wear In putting these pieces'or parts that are shown in figs. 2 and 3 together, the point of-'the angular projection or gusset piece a on the outside part A is placed at the terminal point of slit that severs` the inside part of the thumb from the inside or palm-piece at e, and the point of the angular projection or gusset a', on the inside of the thumb-piece Bf, will come to the end of the slit that severs the back of the thumb from' the hand parts atd, when the parts are sewed together in the usual way. Y v.
A glove made from the pieces thus formed will give Vto the inside of the thumb-pieee-a wide-base, as the gussets a and a throw the seams farther apart than is usual, and at the same time'give ample room for the thumb to ent-er, will fit 'easy upon the thumb and hand,
at the base of the thumb.
Nor '-is there any seam..l on thel top or back of the thumb, as that part at the back of the glove A which forms the wrist is wide, and comes far enough to throw the seam into the centerof the inside of the wrist, and where it will not in the least interfere with'the different positions ofthe hand and thumb, the thumb being iee towork in any direction.
. Thisniethod of cutting gloves is applicable to the' and there is no seam where the wear is the greatest vcutting outof mittens, as what is herein dese'ribedas Athe invention only relates to that part of a glove by which the thumb-piece is connected to the inside and back of the glove, and will answer for mittens as well without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The backs and inside pieces of gloves A B formed in such manner as thatthe back part A shall have the back of the thumb A with theprojecting gusset a and backs of the fingers b in one piece, and the inside part B shall have the inside of the thumb B and the pro- `iecting gusset a and the inside ofthe iingers b in anotherpiece, substantially as described.
2. The glove above described, as a new article of manufacture, when made of the parts' A, B, and c, in the manner substantially. as described.
