HUBERT A. BARSCHOW, 0F KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SEARS, ROEBUCK AND COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
OIL-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Application filed October 16, 1916. Serial No. 125,780.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT A. BARsoHow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oil burners of the type comprising two concentric perforated combustion tubes. In burners of this class it is essential that the air and vapor shall be uniformly distributed around the burner, and hence the perforations must be uniformly spaced.
The combustion tubes are formed from a strip of perforated sheet metal bent into cylindrical form, the ends of the strip being overlapped and welded or otherwise secured together. Difiiculty has heretofore arisen in overlapping and connecting the ends of the strip in such a way as not to obstruct or cover the perforations in the overlapped portions.
The object of the present invention is to provide a construction wherein the overlapped ends of the strip of perforated metal are united in such a manner as not to interfere with the uniform distribution of air or vapor.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a perforated combustion tube embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the tube.
The tube is formed of a strip of perforated metal having overlapped ends. The end 1 of the strip has a straight or square edge Copies of this patent may be obtained for as indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 1. The end 2 of the strip is cut away to form a series of tongues 3 which overlie the end 1 and which are spaced a substantial distance apart. These tongues are .welded to the underlying portions of the end 1 of the strip. The tongues are of less width than the distance between two successive vertically alined perforations 4 and of less length than the distance between two successive horizontally alined perforations 4, and are so spaced as to cover none of said perforations or, at most, so few perforations as not to affect the operation of the burner.
I claim as my invention:
1. A perforated combustion tube formed from a strip of sheet metal one end of the strip being provided with a series of tongues which are overlapped upon and secured to the other end of the strip in the spaces between the perforations.
2. A perforated combustion tube formed from a strip of sheet metal, one end of the strip being cut away to form a series of tongues, the tongues being narrower than the distance between two successive vertically alined perforations and shorter than the distance between two successive horizon tally alined perforations, said tongues being overlapped upon and secured to the other end of the strip in the spaces between the perforations.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HUBERT A. BARSOHOW.
