Specification of Letters ratent.'
Patented Anon 12, 1913.
Application filed October 10, 1910. Serial No. 586,154.'
To (1H 11n/rom. fit may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. Honoris. ot liuilianapolis, county ot Marion. and State of Indiana. have invented a` certain new and useiul (las-Flame Spreader; and l do hereby declare that the tlollowingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object. ot' this invention is to provide an improved gas flame spreader, a device adapted to be placed above a gas burner to and through which the tiame from the burner is directed. lwhereby the flame will be spread and the mixture of air therewith be greatly promoted. `YSuch increased. admixtnre ot' air increases the heat 'of the flame from a given quantity 0i gas or gasolene. It increases the amounty of air or oxygen which is consumed along with the gas. Furthermore. the spreader holds the heat and causes the tlame to spread over greater surface than if the spreader were not used. i
'lhe chief feature consists in the manner ot' forming the spreader so that it may be conveniently and economically made.
The nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the, following description and claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section through a portion ot a gas stoveA with the lower part. broken away and showing the gas spreader in place. plan view ot' the spreader. Fig.` 3 is a central cross section ot the same on the. line l-i5 of Fig. with thel wire covering removed.
rlhereI is shown herein a gas stove l() with a gas pipe l1, valve chamber l2, burner 13. and valve rod lit. The spreader l5 lies upon the burner 13.
'lho spreader is 'formed in the following manner. Upon aftlat sheet. ot' asbestos 1T. a corrugated sheet 1&4 is placed, thus making a compound sheet. Then the compound sheet is rolled into a roll so that the length ot' the roll will be for the full width of the sheets. The roll is then surrounded by an outer rim portion 19 formed otl a series ot flat sheets so as to make theperiphery of the roll thick and strong. l Then the roll is treated so as to secure the sl eets together and form a strong structure. rlhe roll is then sawed into sections halt an inch thick, more or less, and the saw tears the fiber ot' the asbestos so as Fig. 2 is av Abody than it' the s n'eader were not )resent and..incrcased eomlmstioii ot air gives the tia'ni'e propoiitionatelv greater heat. This is promoted by the asbestos ret'crred to. Not only does it spread the flame and increase the combustion ot air, but the spreader itself retains the heat and tends to superheat the mixture toi-med by the tuel and the air, and
thus also promote its better combustion. ln order to protect the asbestos spreader in shipping and handling and also to cooperate therewith in spreading the flame. a wire covering 25 envelops the asbestos spreader, as shown.
By placing the corrugated sheetI upon the tlat sheet and coiling the same into a roll and securing the saaie together and then sawing the roll into sections to make the spreader` the construction ot' the spreader is rendered possible, practical and economical so that the same may be suitably manufactured in large nulnbers 'for the market and at low prices.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
)t llame spreader Jfor gas burners formed ot' a tlat strip ot' asbestos and a cln'rugated strip ot asbestos coiled and secured together so thatl the corrugated strip will lie between the coils ot the tlat strip and provide vertical pertorations through the spreader. and a. wire fabric enveloping said structure, substantially as set forth.
ln witness whereof, I have hereunto aflixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
animan a. lioness.'
