To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and use the same.
This invention relates to burners for the combustion of kerosene, provided with domes; and the principal objects of the in vention are to obtain a burner which will produce, when in operation in a lamp, lantern, and the like, a large flame of proper shape and one which will give corresponding large candle power, while at the same time but little attention or care is required to trim and light the wick of the burner.
Another and important object of the invention is to obtain a device which will retain its shape during its handling and use.
A further object of the invention is to obtain a device which is economical in c011- struction, uniform in production and a device whereof the several parts are attached together in the same relative position in the manufacture of large quantities.
In the drawing referred to Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention, with the chimney thereof removed, and showing the principal part of its interior construction by broken lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the dome and deflector of the device, contained in the dome, said parts forming the princip-al element of a device embodying the invention, on line 2-2 of Fig. 6, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the deflector of the device. Fig. 4: is an end elevation of the deflector. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the deflector, viewed at right angles to the section illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. (3 is a horizontal section of the dome of the device, showing the deflector in top plan view; and Fig. 7 is a plan view of the blank from which, by using duplicates, the deflector of the device is obtained.

A is the base of the burner, and B the dome. Base A is provided with f .)raminations C in the usual way.
I) is the wick tube and (Z the wick raiser.
Dome F) is hinged to base A. by hinge I), andv is held in place by spring I), such being the usual ctmslruction.
E is a deflector within the dome ll and attached thereto. Deflector E is arranged to act in combination with dome B to direct the air which supports combustion onto the flame of the burner when the device is in use. Deflector E is made of two pieces (F) of sheet metal cut to shape, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 7, and bent or formed on broken lines f, The two pieces F are joined together as is hereinafter described. Sheet metal pieces F are respectively provided with lugs or projections G and II, and with the aperture g. By bending the piece F on line 7', the part I is made to form one side of the deflector E, when such piece F is joined to an additional piece F bent. in the same manner, and the part J thereof is made to form one end of said (flellector. The two pieces F which are necessary to make a dcllector are joined together by inserting the projection or lug Gr on each piece in the aperture g of the other piece, and then bending the respective lugs on line g. Either prior or subsequent to the joining of two of the pieces F together, as last above described, the metal included within broken lines 7" is stamped or formed out into shape to obtain recess K, one of said recesses in the part J of each of said pieces. These recesses, it will be observed, respectively progressively enlarge from the bottom thereof to the top edge of the deflector where a comparatively large recess is obtained which comes nearly to but not in contact with the inner wall of the dome B which is adjacent thereof (as illustrated at in), when the deflector is joined to the dome in the manner and position about to be described.

The length of the deflector E is determined by the distance between the broken line f and the aperture g, F ig. 7, of piece F, and the portion of the part I of said piece F which is'between the aperture 9 and the end it is of suitable length so that the ends h, (of the two pieces F forming the deflector), are in contact with the inner face of dome B when projections H are in aperture L and said deflector and dome are thereby joined together with the deflector properly positioned relative to the wick tube D and to said dome.
Piece F is made of sheet brass, steel or other suitable material. WVhen sheet steel is used I prefer to el'ectro-plate it with brass or to cover it with tin as in the ordinary way of making what is known in commerce as sheet tin.
The dome B is made of thin metal, usually brass, in the ordinary way and the deflector E, made as above set fort-h, is readily joined thereto by springing the wall of said dome so as to permit projections H to enter aperture L. Then these projections are thus inserted they may be bent to insure the said projections from comin out therefrom, but in practice I have not Found it necessary to make said bend, (on line 9.)
The deflector E constructed as above described and placed in position in dome B as set forth, operates substantially as follows :-The recesses K, K, protect the base of the flame produced in the use of the de vice from sudden fluctuations which would otherwise occur in the flame, particularly if the ends of the deflector be forced out in substantially broken line f, Fig. 7 and said recesses apparently produce the effect of causing or permitting the flame at the ends thereof to widen out, above the dome B while at the same time sufficient air to support the combustion of the enlarged flame is provided in proper manner and quantity so that no smoke is made by the enlargement and change of shape of said flame.
I find that a deflector made as described and joined to the dome as described is rigidly held in place and that when a large number of burners are made having in each thereof a dome and a deflector uniformity of construction and result are readily obtained and that the device is particularly valuable in this regard and in the fact that a steady flame of large size is produced by the use of the device.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of a dome and a deflector, said dome provided with apertures in the walls thereof, and said deflector consisting of duplicate pieces joined together and to the dome, said duplicate pieces respectively consisting of a sheet of metal blank provided with an aperture and with projections, with one of the projections of one piece in the aperture of the other piece and the remaining projections of said pieces in the apertures in the dome.
2. The combination of a dome and a deflector, said dome provided with apertures in the walls thereof, and said deflector consisting of duplicate pieces joined together and to, the dome, said duplicate .pieces respectively consisting of a sheet metal blank provided with an aperture and with projections, with one of the projections of one piece in the aperture of the other piece and the remaining projections of said pieces in the apertures 'in the dome, said pieces respectively provided with an outwardly flared portion positioned to form recesses in the ends of the deflector, and said deflector positioned relative to the dome with the end walls ofthe recesses in the ends of the deflector near to the inner wall of the dome.
