JOHN M. STOKOE, OF OANANDAIGUA, NEWV'YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES H. PRINCE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED LAMP GLOBE AND CHIMNEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No..727,709, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed November 24, 1902. Serial No. 132,595. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. STOKOE, of Oanandaigua, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Lamp Globe and Chimney, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
My invention is acombined lamp globe and chimney, the same being hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had in this specification to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This device is designed to be used'with ordinary burners for kerosene-oil lamps for illuminating purposes; and the main object of the invention is to produce a globe and chimney combined that will produce a bright and steady flame while being carried about or in drafts or currents of air.
Other objects and advantagesof the invention will be brought out and made to appear in the following specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, the globe and the chimney being axially sectioned on the dotted line 1 1 in Fig. 4. Fig.
2 is an edge view of the globe and-the chimney axially sectioned on the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse section of the globe and chimney on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a View looking down on top of the device indicated by arrow 4. in Fig. 1.
A in the drawings is an ordinary burner used with a kerosene-lamp, a being the wick,
b the wick-tube, cihe'shaft for controlling the wick, and d the spring-holdersfor the" -tened form of theinner tube or chimney proper enables it to receive and inclose the upper portion of the flame 6 without distort- 6o ing or breaking it. The annular space h within the globe and outside of the chimney is constantly filled with air, and the confinement of the upper and hottest portion of the flame within the chimney prevents the sides of the globe from becoming highly heated, which is a matter of great importance. Being at a comparatively low temperature the globe is-less liable to-become broken on account ofthe touch of cold bodies liable to be encountered while carrying the lamp about or the spattering of liquids against it, these together being the cause of much breaking of glass globes and chimneys. Furthermore, the protection the outer globe gives to the inner highly-heated chimney causes the latter to last longer than if not thus protected,
The lower end or base of the globe is below the burner, resting-upon ahorizontal flange 2' at the base of the latter, while the lower .end of the chimney is above the burner, as shown, the projecting ignited end of the wick being between them.
What I claim as my'inventiom'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- .1. Acombinedlampglobeandchimneyconsisting of an outerpart or globe and aninner part or chimney formed in single piece and imperforate at the junction thereof at the IOO perforate at their junction said globe part and the chimney being joined at the upper end of the chimney and each being flattened or of greater dimension horizontally one Way than the other, substantially as shown and set forth.
3. In combination with a lamp-burner, a combined globe and chimney consisting of an outer part and aninner part, both coaxial and 10 in a single piece, the connecting portion at I the upper end being imperforate, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of November, 1902, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN M. STOKOE.
