LAMP SHADE OR GLOBE HGLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 9, 1917..
Application filed February 15, 1916. Serial No. 78,407.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER LITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Shade or Globe Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamp shades or globe holders, and has for its object to provide a device of such type, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with a series of resilient and adjustable clamping members for detachably connecting the shade or globe with the holder.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a lamp shade or globe holder which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, elficient and convenient in its use, overcoming the objection at present when employing set screws solely to clamp the shade or globe to the holder, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a globe holder in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an inverted plan.
Referring to the drawings in detail the holder consists of an intermediate portion 1 which tapers somewhat, a frusto-conical closed top 2 having the sides provided with openings 3 for the passage of air, and an offset lower or bottom portion 4 which is cylindrical in contour and vertical in crosssection.
Mounted upon the top 2 of the holder is a cap member 5, which is of inverted cup shape and of materially greater diameter that the upper end of the body portion 1, to form an air space 6 which surrounds the top 2.
The reference character 7 denotes a hanger which is formed with a depending threaded shank 8, the latter extending through the cap 5 and top 2 and carries a nut 9 whereby the hanger 7 is fixedly secured in position and also the cap 5.
Arranged against the inner face of the body portion 5 is a series of spring fingers 10. Rivets 11 are employed for fixedly securing the upper ends of the fingers 10 to the body portion 1. The fingers 10 extend below the lower edge of the bottom 1 of the holder. The lower part of each of the fingers 10 is of ogee curvature, as at 12, and each of the said curved portions has an opening for the passage of an adjusting screw 13, the latter consists of a threaded shank provided at its outer end with a head 1 Connected with the curved portion 12 of each of the fingers 10 is a threaded boss 15 with which engages the stem of the screw 18. The body portion 1 has a series of oval-shaped slots 16 which are vertically disposed and permit of shifting of the adjusting screws 13, during the adjusting of the spring fingers. The forming of the lower portion of each of the spring fingers 10 of ogee curvature provides a lip 17, which depends below the lower edge 18 of the bottom aof the holder, and constitutes what may be termed a guide for positioning the shade or globe between the spring fingers 10 and the inner face of the bottom 4.
The shade or globe is secured to the holder by positioning the same between the bottom 4 and the fingers and then adjusting the curved lower portion of the finger against the globe whereby the latter will be connected with the holder.
Each of the spring fingers is set up so that the portion thereof which is not curved snugly engages the inner faces of the intermediate part 1 of the holder.
To'prevent the spring fingers from cracking the globe or shade, which would be the case if the spring fingers were drawn in an unusually tight manner against the globe or shade, each of the shanks 13 is provided with a loose sleeve 20, which is interposed between the bottom 4 and the spring fingers 10 and each of said sleeves 20 constitutes means to prevent the drawing up tightly of the spring fingers, or in other words will arrest movement of the spring fingers toward the bottom 4. The length of each of the sleeves 20 is such that they will not retard the clamping action of the lower end of a finger 10 when said lower end is shifted to clamp the globe or shade between the bottom 4 and the said lower end.
What I claim is 1. A holder for the purpose set forth comprising a body portion having its bottom off set with respect to the upper part thereof and cylindrical in contour, a plurality of vertically disposed spring fingers arranged within and having their upper portions connected to the upper part of said body portion and their lower portions projecting down through and free of said cylindrical bottom, said fingers spaced from the inner face of said cylindrical bottom, said cylindrical bottom having a plurality of openings, said lower portions of said fingers having openings and integral bosses, said bosses being threaded and forming a continuation of the openings in the fingers, and adjusting screws carried by and disposed at right angles with respect to said cylindrical bottom and extending through and having threaded engagement with the bosses for shifting said lower parts of the spring fingers to clamping osition.
2. A holder for the purpose set forth comprising a body portion having its bottom ofiset with respect tothe upper part thereof and cylindrical in countour, a plurality of vertically disposed spring fingers arranged within and having their upper portions connected to the upper part of said body portion and their lower portions projecting down through and free of said cylindrical bottom, said fingers spaced from the inner face of said cylindrical bottom, said cylindrical bottom having a plurality of openings, said lower portions of said fingers having openings and integral bosses, said bosses being threaded and forming a continuation of the openings in the fingers, and adjusting screws carried by and disposed at right angles with respect to said cylindrical bottom and extending through and having threaded engagement with the bosses for shifting said lower parts of the spring fingers to clamping position, the lower part of each of said spring fingers depending below said cylindrical bottom and of ogee curvature.
3. A holder for the purpose set forth comprising a body portion having its bottom offset with respect to the upper part thereof and cylindrical in contour, a plurality of vertically disposed spring fingers arranged within and having their upper portions connected to the upper part of said body portion and their lower portions projecting down through and free of said cylindrical bottom, said fingers spaced from the inner face of said cylindrical bottom, said cylindrical bottom having a plurality of openings, said lower portions of said fingers having openings and integral bosses, said bosses being threaded and forming a continuation of the openings in the fingers, and adjusting screws carried by and disposed at right angles with respect to said cylindrical bottom and extending through and having threaded en-' gagement with the bosses for shifting said lower parts of the spring fingers to clamping position, said openings in said bottom being oval-shape.
i. A holder for the purpose set forth comprising a body portion having its bottom offset with respect to the upper part thereof and cylindrical in contour, a plurality of vertically disposed spring fingers arranged within and having their upper portions connected to the upper part of said body portion and their lower portions projecting down through and free of said cylindrical bottom, said fingers spaced from the inner face of said cylindrical bottom, said lower portions of said fingers having openings and integral bosses, said bosses being threaded and forming a continuation of the openings in the fingers, and adjusting screws carried by and disposed at right angles with respect to said cylindrical bottom and extending through and having threaded engagement with the bosses for shifting said lower parts of the spring fingers to clamping position, and sleeves loosely mounted upon said adjusting screws and interposed between said cylindrical bottom and the lower part of said spring fingers and adapted to limit the movement in one direction of the lower part of said spring fingers.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
