Description

A. J. owswomn. COVER HOLDER FOR GLASS JARS. APPLICATION FILED 0CT.2Z, l9l5.
FIG. 1.
auomtox ARTHUR J HOLDSWORTH witness STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
ARTHUR J HOLDSWORTH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO CHRISTIAN SCHNEIDER, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COVERHOLDER FOR GLASS JARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
Application filed October 22, 1915. Serial No. 57,246.
To all whom it mag concern;
- Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. Hows- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Detroit, county of WVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cover-Holders for Glass Jars, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to cover holders for glass jars and the like, and its object is a cheap and efficient means by which a cover of fragile material may be held in hinged relation to a body of like material. An additional object of the invention is a clevice for the purpose stated having a limited adjustment whereby a device of a particular size may be used with jars that vary in size within the limit of adjustment. In jars of this general diameter there is some slight variation in size between jars of like capacity and for this reason a limited adjustment in the device is required. These and other objects and the general novel features of construction of the device are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the complete device showing the cover holder in hinged relation with the part adapted to be secured to the body of the vessel.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device as applied to a glass candy jar showing the position of the parts when the cover is opened.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawing and specification.
As shown in Fig. 1 the device consists of a ring shaped member 1 of a size adapted to be secured about the neck of a vessel, the two adjacent ends 2 and 3 of the member being apertured to receive a bolt 4. The extreme ends are bent at a right angle to the parts 2 and 3 extending into the path of movement of the cover holder proper as hereinafter stated. Covers for jars of this character are usually provided with a knob 5 by means of which the cover may be lifted. A holder is provided preferably formed of two similar parts 6 and 7 in substantially parallel relation the two adjacent ends being apertured to receive the bolt 1 on which the members pivot and terminating in the opposite ends 8 and 9 of a size to engage about the knob or other convenient portion of the cover. Adjacent the semi-circular portions the two members are secured together by means of a threaded screw 10 passing through a flattened part of the two members as shown in Fig. 1. These parts 6 and 7 both have a form as shown at 7 in Fig. 2, the parallel legs being bent to pass about the edge of the cover and engage about the bolt 1, and the bent ends 11 and 12 heretofore mentioned extend into the path of movement of the legs 6 and 7 when the cover is raised as indicated in Fig. 2, and providing a stop or rest for the said holder in the cover retaining it in the open position. A spreader 13 tubular in form is placed between the ends of the legs 6 and 7, on the bolt 4, and between these legs and the portions 2 and 3 of the ring shaped member 1 washers 14 may be inserted to enable the diameter of the ring 1 to be altered. That is, by inserting one or more washers between each leg and the contiguous portion 2 and 3 of the ring, the ring may be,
enlarged slightly to accommodate variation in size of the vessel and contrarily the wash ers may be removed to decrease the diameter of the ring on tightening the bolt 4. By this arrangement the ring may be made to tightly engage the neck of the jar and by means of the screw 10, the semi-circular portions 8 and 9 may be made to tightly engage various sized knobs or other portions of the cover.
While I have shown the parts 8 and 9 of a certain size to engage a knob of the cover, it is to be understood that these portions may be of any size desired to engage a corresponding sized part of the cover as may be convenient. Also by altering the diameter of the bend of the part 6 and 7 adjacent the pivot point, the said parts may be adjusted in length to accommodate jars of slightly different diameters.
The cover is preferably provided with a gasket 15 or similar gasket of any approved form to prevent breakage of the cover by too sudden contact with the body.
With a device of the nature described a vessel and cover formed of fragile material is securely held in position free from liability of fracture by accident, and by forming the device of Wire or similar inexpensive material a cheap and efficient device for the purpose is provided, Having thus briefly described myinvention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 'is 1. A device of the character described comprising a ring shaped member formed of a single piece of Wire or the like having the ends extending in parallel relation therefrom and each terminating in a portion extending at a right angle toward the opposite part, said parallel parts having apertures, and a bolt extending through said apertures, the cover holder member formed of tWo similar parts having apertured ends through Which saidbolt extends, the terminal bent portions providing a rest for the cover holder parts When in raised position. 2. A device of the character described comprising a ring shaped member formed of a single piece of Wire, the-two ends being bent to extend in parallel relation at an angle from the body each terminating in similarly bent portions extending toward the opposite member, the parallel parts having apertures, a bolt extending through the apertures, a cover holder member formed of two similar parts in substantially parallel relation having spaced "apertured ends through which the bolt extends, a tubular spacing member on the bolt between the, said ends, and spacing members between each of the said ends and the-adjacent excation.
