To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARGARET DONAILD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winchester, in the county of Clark and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwaists, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to underwaists and has for its primary object to provide a garment of this character particularly designed to be worn by juveniles of either sex, and which affords a maximum freedom ofrmovement of the arms with an entire absence of binding, or pulling or stretching of the garment. I

It is another object of the invention to provide an underwaist for children which may be easily and quickly donned and fastened upon the body by the child and can be readily removed.

It is a further general object of the invention to provide a childs underwaist of such construction that deficiencies existing in garments of this type now on the market are entirely obviated, but without in any way complicating the construction of the garment or increasing its manufacturing cost.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts to be described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates the two main body sections of the garment and 6 the front sections thereof. Each of the body sections 5 consists of a relatively narrow main portion 7 which is adapted to extend around the waist and over the hips and from each of these main portions a gradually narrowing attenuated shoulder strap 8 extends and at its terminal is connected to the shoulder strap section 9 which extends from the side section 6 of the garment. The main portion 7 of the inner body section 5 is of greater depth than the hereinafter more fully corresponding portion of the other body section of the garment which laps upon the exterior of said inner section and is bound thereto by the stitched band or tape indicated at 10. The two front sections 6 of the garment are similarly connected by the seams, indicated at 11, to the opposite ends of the portions 7 of the two body sections 5. It will thus be observed that by the provision of the relatively long attenuated shoulder straps S and 9 on the sections of the garment, the deep arm-holes 12 are pro duced. The material from which the sections 5 are produced is cut obliquely along the bias, as indicated at 13 and defines one edge of the shoulder strap extension, said obliquely extending edge of the material oiningfthe portions 7 thereof adjacent one end of the body section 5.

One of the front sections 6 of the garment 1s provided with a number of buttons 14:, adjacent its free vertical edge and the corresponding edge of the other front section 6 has a similar number of button holes therein to receive the respective buttons.

From reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the manner in which the garment is to be worn will be readily understood. The arms are passed through the deep arm holes 12 and the two side sections are brought around over the abdomen and connected together by means of the buttons lat. From Fig. 2, it will be seen that the obliquely extending shoulder strap extensions on the sections 5 of the garment lap upon each other and fit snugly against the back of the wearer. The arms may be freely moved in all directions, without causing the garment to uncomfortably bind upon the body of the wearer or stretch the material of the garment. This desirable result is accomplished without in any way complicating the construction of the garment or greatly adding to the manufacturing cost thereof, over the ordinary garment of this character now upon the market. As the garment buttons upon the body in front, the child may readily apply the garment without assistance, or remove the same. It is, of course, understood, that as illus trated in the drawing. the body-band of the garment is equipped with the necessary number of buttons so that the underdrawers may be properly attached to the waist.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawconstitute the back of the ent ages and in every case retaining-sub stantially the same general form and construction. It will also. be understood that the device is susceptible of a great many modifications therein and I therefore re serve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

The shoulder straps suspend the Weight of the childs clothing, and are of such Width as to lie upon tion between the neck and the shoulder and arm joint, thus leaving the arm joint'free from pressure or irritation. By'the pro vision ofthe crossed body pieces 5 which garment, the Weight of the clothing on the right side is suspended from the left shoulder and the 1 Weight of the clothing on the left sidr is suspended from the right shoulder. This opposing division of the weight across the shoulder blades has a tendency to exert pressure upon the back and unconsciously cause the wearer to'maintain an erect position, thus preventing round shoulders or a stooping posture,

and also be comfortable to the wearer.

Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 1. An underwaist consisting of two body sections constituting the back portion of the garment, and two similar front sections, one of said body sections having a 'main waist portion and the other section a corresponding relatively narrow portion stitched to the waist portion of the first named body the muscular oonnecstrap attenuation, each of said body sections being also cut to provide an obliquely extending gradually attenuated portion terminating in a shoulder strap section secured to the shoulder strap of one of the front sections of the garment, said extensions of the body sections of the garment intersecting and lapping upon each other, and means for fastening the free vertical edgesof the front sections of the garment together; 7

2. An underwaist consisting of two body sections constituting the-back of the garment and having waist portions stitched to each other, said body sections-also gradually attenuated obliquely disposed portions extending in relatively opposite directions, and lapping upon each other, said attenuated portions terminating in shoulder strap sections, and two front sections stitchedto theop posite= ends of the waist portion of one body section,and also having shoulder strap extensions connected to the respective shoulder strap extensions of the body sections of the garment, one provided on its free vertical edge with spaced button holes and the other-front section being provided with a plurality of buttons fon engagement therethrough, to secure .the garment upon the body of the wearerf In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
