Be it known that I, HARRY W. OLNEY, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, and a resident of Colfax, in the county of Whitman and State oli' Washington, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Rulers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in rulers, and the invention has for its object to provide a device of the a scale on one face and provided at the other face with means for supporting a strip of' blotting paper in spaced relation with respect to the adjacent face of the plate, to permit the easy application of the blotter to the surface to be blotted.

.ln the present embodiment of the invention, a strip 1 of resilient and flexible material is provided, as for instance, steel or the like, and said strip has upon one face and near one edge a series of graduations torming a scale 2. At the opposite face the strip is provided near each end with a socket or holder, each socket or holder comprising a body 5, side flanges 6, and an end llange 7. The free edges of the flanges 6 and 7 are in the same plane, and in a plane inclined to the body 5. Thus the flanges 7 are of the least height, and each flange 6 at its connection with the Harige 7 is of the same height and gradually increases in height toward the opposite end of the body. The body 5 of each socket or holder is of less length than the width of the strip l, and the free edges of the ianges 6 and 7 are secured to that face of the strip 1 remote from the scale 2. The sockets are arranged with their open faces inward, and with the anges 7 at the ends of the strip 1, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2.

l by means of a rivet 10, the said rivet en? headed, as shown, to retain the parts in position, and the arrangement is such that the lugs 9 "are in contact with the bodies 5 of the sockets at their outer ends, but are spaced apart therefrom at their inner ends.

A series of superposed lilling strips 12 is arranged between the strips 1 and `8-9, the said strips being held in place by the rivet 10, and the strips are of such length that they will contact at their ends with the lugs 9. and strip 8-9. Thus a support is provided l'or the blotter strip, which is held between the socket body 5 and the lugs 9. This support, while sufficiently rigid to cause the blotter to properly blot, is yet yielding to a certain extent.

The blotter strip indicated at 13 is of a width corresponding to the width of the strip 8-9, and is arranged on the outer face of the strip, and this strip 8 9 is resilient to and there is sullicient clamping action between the sockets and the lugs 9 to hold the blotting strip in place.

It-will be noticed that the ends of the strip 13 are bent at an angle as indicated at 14e, and pass between the bodies of the sockets and the lugs 9 of the strip 8-9. This strip 8*-9 is secured to the strip l by the rivet 10, which also clamps the filling strips l2 in place.

I claim:

1. A blotter comprising a supporting strip of resilient material having at each end of one face a pocket or socket, the said pockets or sockets having their inner ends open, and that wall of each socket remote from the supporting strip iiiclining away from the ad] acent face of the strip toward the inner end of the socket, a strip of resilient material connected to the supporting strip intermediate the ends of the said strips, the resilient strip having at each end an angular portion approximately parallel with the inclined wall of the adjacent socket for clamping the end of a strip of blotting material between the said portion and the inclined wall of the adjacent socket, and filling strips arranged between the resilient strip and the supporting strip.

2. A blotter comprising a supporting strip of resilient material having at each end of one face a pocket or socket, the said pockets or sockets having their inner ends lil@ Vresilient material connected to the supportingstrip interrnedv ate the ends of the said Y strips, the resilient strip having at each .end
