To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnoncn A. MORROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Novelties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to advertising novelties of the type which are made and distributed in large numbers as gratis souvenirs.

The invention contemplates the construction, primary, of a folding fan which may be constructed in large numbers from cardboard blanks so as to be cheap enough for distribution at moving picture shows, base ball games, fairs and like gatherings as advertising novelties, the device being capable of being folded so as to be easily placed in the pocket.

The novelty is furthermore of such a character that it may be used as a display device in windows, the folding portion constituting in one position a handle and in another position an easel or support for the fan body. The device thus constitutes a novelty which may be used first as a display device in stores and other places, and later distributed as souvenir fans of unique design.

With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, my invention will be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Referring more particularly to said drawings, 1 represents the body of the fan which is formed, as best seen in Figs. 2 and 3, of identical blank sections 2 and 3 of suitable fan shape. Said blanks 2 and 3 are stamped from cardboard or other suitable sheet material, and have their central portions stamped therefrom to provide the openings 4. straight edges 5 at the lower ends of the blanks 2 and 3, the stamped out portions bemg thus hinged to the blanks 2 and S, and are trimmed down upon their sides to provide the tabs or handles 6. The blanks 2 and 3 are pasted together back to back, and confine therebetween a sheet 7 which in most instances will be paper upon which is printed advertising matter or pictures of moving picture actors, base ball players, or other suitable representations. The handle members 6 now appear hinged to the opposite sides of the body 1 at the lower ends of the openings 4. When the handle members 6 are turned downwardly and backwardly into contact with the body 1, their lower ends project below the end of the body and come together to provide a comparatively heavy handle. The free ends of the handle members 6 are hinged together, as by sewing a seam thereacross, or any other desired manner. At points just below the lower end of the body 1, the handle members 6 are broken in opposite directions to provide the hinges 8, which permit the handle sections to be spread in opposite directions so that the short sections 9 of the handle members 6 may be folded upwardly into the openings 1, thereby carrying-the main portions of the handles 6 upwardly and folding them with their inner faces in contact with the sections 9 and the lower end of the body 1, as best shown in Fig. 5. In this manner the handle members are folded entirely upon the body 1 so as to be disposed out of the way when it is desired to pack the fan as in a pocket. The folded handle above described may be utilized as an easel as shown in F igs. and 3. When used in this manner, the front section 9 is folded downwardly against the front of the body 1, and the handle 6 attached thereto extends rearwardly from the lower end of the body in horizontal position, so as to form a base plate. The rear handle section 9 lies within the recess 4 behind the sheet 7, and the cor responding handle 6 extends from the upper end of the rear section 9 to the rear end of the handle 6, so that an easel is provided upon which the body 1 is supported, the body being supported upon the front edge 5 and the rear hinge 8, and having its lower end braced against the rear face of the front handle section 9.

2. An advertising device, comprising in combination, a body consisting of blanks secured back to back, a handle stamped from each blank and bent therefrom, means connecting the ends of said handles, and hinges placed at intermediate points of said handles to permit the latter to be folded upwardly into contact with the body, said handles being also adapted to be disposed behind said body to provide an easel for supporting the latter.
