UN DERGARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 29, 1915. Serial No. 63,955.
To all 1.071 am it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN T. BASKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence. in the county of Jackson and have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to-which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification,
My invention relates to under garments,
and more particularly to garments of drop seat, open and closed crotch types, the principal object of the invention being to conveniently hold the drop seat in closed position and to provide for adjustment of the ga: :nent to the size of the weare= to obviate binding when the wearer of the garment stoops, and to give to the wearer the choice of a drop seat, open or closed crotch in a union, or two piece undergarment. It is also an object of the invention to provide a two piece undergarment, that it may be worn as a two piece suit, or when by con necting the upper, and lower garment members, may be conveniently converted to a union suit.
In accomplishing these objects I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a front view of a union garment constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a rear view of the same, a part of 0 the drop seat being turned back to illustrate its fastening. F 1g. III shows a slightly modified form of the garment illustrated in Figs. I and II. Fig. IV is a rear view of a two piece garment containing the improvement and showing the seat flap open. Fig. V is a view showing a modified form of suit, particularly illustrating the method of attaching the upper and'lower members. Fig. VI is a side view of the garment, particularly illustrating the side attachment of one of the flaps. Fig..VII is a front view of part of the two piece garment.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, 7 1 designates a garment which may 'be of a knitted or woven type, the upper garment section 2, and the leg and which comprises members 3-4, one of the leg members, here shown to be the member 4, having a flap 5 extending entirely across the seat and provided at its free edge with a button (3 for taking into button holes 7 garment.
The seat'member 8 of the opposite leg member 3 has a free edge 9 that is adapted for overlying the seat member 5 of'the leg 4, the upper edge of the seat member 8 being provided witha band-10yhaving a button 11 on its free end adapted for taking into button holes 12 in the waist band, to hold the 'free end of the drop seat in position to keep the garment closed.
Formed integrally with the upper section 2 is a flap 13, which lies within the flaps 5-8 of the leg members and prevents gappin at the opening. 7
II so desired the seat member 5 may terminate at about the line of bifurcation of the garment as in the modification shown by' Fig. III, and with this construction I provide the flap 5 with a button 15, and the flap 8 with button holes 17 for receiving the button 15 on the flap member 5, to hold the parts together.
In either the preferred or modified form I preferably attach an elastic strap 18 to the upper garment 2 and provide the same with button holes 19 for attachment to a button 20 on the under flap member 5, or to the button 15 that is carried by the inner flap member 5 and projects through the button holes 17 in the flap 8 in order to support the flaps in closed position but which will yield when the wearer bends over, to prevent binding.
The two piece garment is substantially similar to the one piece, except that the upper and lower garments are separate, the flaps 58 and 5 closing and opening in the same manner, except that in the two piece suit the upper garment Is provided with a number of flaps 20 having button holes 21 for receiving buttons 22 on the waist band of the lower garment, so that the two may be held together and worn as a union suit.
I also provide the outer seat part, near and on opposite sides of the crotch of the garment, with button holes 25, for receiving buttons 26 that are secured on the underlying seat flap portion 5, whereby the two parts may be held closely together so that the garment may be used the same as a closed crotch suit, but by leaving the same Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
unbuttoned it may be converted into an open crotch garment.
It is apparent that by providing the waist band with a plurality of button holes the garment may be taken up or loosened to fit th wearer, and the seat parts may be held "closed and bagging prevented.
2. An undergarment comprising upper and lower members, the lower member having inner and outerflap members, each pro vided with a waist band sectlon, the inner waist band section of the inner flap having a button above the crotch position and the outer flap member having button holes in its waist band section through which said button is adapted for projection, and a strap extended from the upper garment and having a button hole for connecting the strap with the button on the inner flap member when the latter is projected through the outer flap member.
3. An undergarment comprising upper and lower members, the lower member having inner and outer flaps, the inner flap having a button thereon and the outer flap having a plurality of button holes through which said button is adapted for projection,
and a strap depending from the upper garment and having a plurality of button holes through which said button may be projected for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. I
