Application filed May 1, 1916.
To all whom t 1n ay G01/worn Be it known that I, CHARLES BURTON Bauman, a citizen of the United States, residing at lBradford, in the county of Stark, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overshoe-Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an overshoe buckle.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved construction for a buckle in which the two parts thereof may be adjusted with relation to each other and positively held in their adjusted positions.
A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the buckle that the parts may be readily separated but the possibility lof their becoming accidentally separated will be obviated.
A still further object of the invention re sides in the provision of a buckle which will be cheap to manufacture and which may be made from a blank of material.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a buckle constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the position of the members of the buckle and also the locking means, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken in a plane at right angles to Fig. 3.
In the drawing I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention which includes a body portion comprising a rear plate 1, and edge plate 2, a front plate 3 and an opposite edge plate t. These plates are bent into rectangular form as illustrated in the drawing and the end of the plate 1 is extended beyond the adjacent ends of the other plates and is provided with an opening 5 to which the strap or other attaching member may be secured. A locking member is slidably mounted between the plates Specification of Letters Patent.

1 and 2 and is movable toward and away from the plates 2 and et, being pressed normally away from the plate 2 by a leaf spring 6. This locking member comprises a pair of spaced disks 7 and 8, the latter of which bears against the plate 1 and the former of which bears against the plate 3. A shank 9 extends between these flanges and against this shank the spring 6 bears, being guided by the lianges 7 and 8. A thumb piece 10 extends from the shank 9 and through a rectangular elongated slot 11 in the plate 3, the slot permitting the sliding movement of the locking member. A plate 12 is adapted to extend between the plates 1 and 3 and between the shank 9 of the locking member and the plate L1. This plate 12 is provided with a plurality of notches 13 in which the shank 9 is adapted to engage, being normally forced into these notches by the leaf spring 6. The end of the plate 12 is enlarged and is provided with an elongated opening 14 for the attachment of a strap or other suitable fastening means.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simply constructed buckle which comprises a pair of separable parts and a simple locking means for securing the parts together in various adjusted positions and I have so constructed the device that the adjustment may be readily made and the accidental disengagement of the separable parts will be prevented.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the de tails of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a buckle, the combination with spaced front and rear plates and edge plates all of which are formed from a single sheet of metal, of a fastener plate slidable between the said plates and having rectangular notches in one edge thereof, a locking member slidable transversely between the front and rear plates, said locking member having a rectangular shank and a pair of spaced flanges and a spring extending from In testimony whereof, I aix my signa One edge plate and having a. flat face beaiture, 1n the presence of two witnesses.
