IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-LIGHTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,453, dated October 31, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOEL B. MILLER, of Rondout, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigar- Lighter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in whieh Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, of my improved cigar-lighter. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse section of the same taken on the line 0 c, Fig. l.

This invention relates to a new pendent cigarlighter, similar to those now used in cigar stores, but so arranged that it will produce the flame by the consumption of kerosene or other burningfluid instead of gas. The invention consists chiefly in so hanging the pendent burner and reservoir to a frame or arm that, by vibrating the former on its pivot, the wick will be shifted to give a greater or less flame, as may be required.

These parts are arranged, preferably, of the form shownthat is to say, in imitation of the weighted gas cigar-lighter now The reservoir is screwed or so fastened to the tube that it can be conveniently taken off to be refilled. The wick extends through the wick-tube into the reservoir and projects also from the upper burner-end of the tube, where it is lighted. a is a larger tube, embracing the lower end of the wick-tube to guard the flame against draught or wind. The wick-tube has a projecting ear, I), which is, by a pin, (1, pivoted to the end of a hanging arm, D. The pin d is, by a set-screw, 6, locked to said arm D, so that the wick-tube turns loosely on it. Upon the pin 01 is mounted the ratchetwheel f, which regulates the height of the wick, and which, by having the pin d locked to the arm D, causes the wick to be shifted whenever the tube is turned on said pivot. Thus, when the apparatus is at rest, hanging in a nearly vertical position, as in the drawing, the wick will protrude but little from the upper end of the burner, keeping the flame 3' 11st alive, without wasting any of the burning-fluid unnecessarily but when the handle or reservoir is swung up to bring the wicktube into a nearly horizontal position such motion will cause the wick to be drawn out more and enlarge the flame to adapt it to the purpose of lighting cigars. In this manner a cigar-lightor fully as effective and practical as the gas cigar-lighter, but much more economical than the same in point of fuel, is produced. By loosening the set-screw c the pin (1 will be relieved, so that it may be turned by hand to set the wick at the proper position, whereupon the set-screw is refastened.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The pendent cigar-lighter, consisting of a pivoted wick-tube and oil-reservoir, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The pin d and ratchet-wheel f, fastened to the arm D, and combined with the pivoted wicktube so as to automatically regulate the wick when the tube is swung on its pivot, as specified.
