Description
I... TUBEY.
Attachment for Lamps.
Patented Aug. 31,1875.
OW W NJEIEFS, PHOTO-UTNOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON. D C.
LYMAN TOBEY, OF NAPLES, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,2l1, dated August 31, 1875; application filed August 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LYMAN TOBEY, of Naples, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Lamps 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to burners for lamps using the ordinary kerosene or other'hydrocarbon oils and it consists in an attachment for lamp-burners whereby the size of the wick may be reduced, without turning it down, to form a night-lamp, by pivoting the cap down on one side of the tube, so that it can be turned lengthwise of the tube, and making the cap to cover nearly the entire top of the wick, whereby the cap may be adjusted to cover just'as much or little of the tube lengthwise of the top of the wick, thus regulating the size of. the wick exposed to the flame, and regulating the size of the flame, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out by the claim.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ordinary burner with my i1nprovement attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tube and burner; and Fig. 3 is a section of the tube and burner.
A represents the wick-tube of any ordinary lamp-burner, provided with the usual wickraising mechanism. To this wick-tube is pivoted a cap, B, or the cap may be pivoted to a tube, 0, to be slipped over the wick-tube lengthwise of the top, and said cap is provided with a rod or handle, D, which passes down through the bottom of the burner on the outside of the lamp. The cap B is constructed of such size that, when turned over the top of the wick-tube, it will co er about seven-eighths of the wick, more or less, leaving the balance of the wick exposed for burnmg.
It is well known that when a lamp-wick is turned up for ordinary use the flame consumes the gas emanating from the oil, but when the wick is turned down for use at night the gas is not consumed, but escapes into the room, creating a very offensive and disagreeable odor. v By my invention the flame is reduced to a considerable extent without turning the wick down, burning only a certain portion of the wick, and this turned up to the ordinary height. Thus the gas is consumed, and no offensive odor escapes into the room.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The wick-tube A in combination with the cap B, rod D, and wick, the cap being pivoted to the side of the tube A or 0, covering nearly the entire Wick, and arranged to be turned lengthwise with the top of the wick, where the part of the wick exposed to the flame may be regulated as desired, all as and for the purpose herein described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LYMAN TOBEY.
