ELLSWORTH A. HORTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
Application filed October 31, 1914. Serial No. 869,529.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELLSWORTH A. HOR- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of the Bronx, New York city, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders, of whloh the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in binders or fastening means adapted for securing covers upon receptacles and is particularly adapted for and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in its application to ice tubs or barrels.
In the drawing, the figure is a perspective view of the binder applied to an ice cream freezer.
Referring to said drawing, 1 indicates the tub or barrel, and 2 the cover 'of bagging, canvas, or other suitable material usually secured over the top of the same to keep the cracked ice in position upon the cream or other material within the container in the barrel or tub. It has been the practice heretofore to secure these tops of fabric by tacks or nails, but this has been found a tedious and impractical method owing to the time and labor consumed, not only in tacking the covers in position, but for removing the same after the covers have been torn away. The rusty tacks have also been a source of injury and great annoyance to those handling the tubs.
According to my invention I prefer to employ a suitable plate or clasp indicated by the reference character 3 which may be suitably secured to the upper side of the tub or barrel by any suitable means such as the screws 44' as shown. The plate 3 is suitably provided with a tapered socket or bore such as 5 and a tongue or lip suehas 6, and the tub is suitably cut away beneath the Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
tongue 6 and is preferably bored through to admit the plug 7 through the tapered bore 5 within the plate 3. y
8 is a suitable hay-wire or other binding means provided with a loop at one end adapted to engage the tongue or lip 6 as shown, after which the same is laid around the lower edge of the cover '2, the other end of the wire 8 being projected within the bore or hole 5, after which the plug or bung 7 may be introduced and driven home, thus drawing the loose end of the wire 8 into the hole and binding it securely around the lower edge of the cover 2, thus securely retaining the same in position.
When it is desired to remove the cover 2, instead of cutting or ripping the same away as usual, it is only necessary to tap the side of the bung 7 in the usual manner in which a bung is removed, after which the wire will be free to drop away leaving the cover also free to be removed.
Of course it will be understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
A device of the class described, comprising a plate with a hole therethrough, adapted to be secured upon a tub having a hung hole so that the hole of said device and the bung hole of said tub are in alinement, means for holding one end of a flexible element to said plate, the other end of said flexible element being adapted to be secured between the sides of said holes and the bung when said bung is driven'into the said holes.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELLSWORTH A. HORTON.
