Description

gwuvmtoz Andrew Ofstedahl Guam;
Patented July 1 1,925
uni-ran srares PATENT OFFICE.-
HALTER FASTENER.
-App1ication filed May 22, 1924. Serial No. 715,178.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW Orsrnnnrrn, a subject of the IIing of Great Britain, residing at Scout Lake, in the Province of Saskatchewan and- Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Inn provements in Halter Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to a halter fastener for use particularly in mangers or horsestalls but adapted to be used also in other analogous situations where it is desired toquickly attach or detach a rope or other restraining device.
It is an object ofthe invention to provide a device which may be applied to a wooden bar or the like,- and which maybe readily used to grip a halterrope or the like liri'nly and which may be readily operated'to .re-
lease said rope thus avoiding the necessity of tying a knot which would necessarily have to be untied to be removed.
The invention will first be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of the invention, and later pointed out in' the claims at the end of the description.
In said drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a bar with the halter fastener applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fastener with parts broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form.
In said drawings, in which the same reference characters are used to denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the invention comprises a body member 10 formed preferably of a sheet of metal bent to fit about a bar 11 of a substantial size such as is used in stalls for horses. The body member 10 is adapted to be secured to the bar by means of nails driven through each side adjacent the end thereof, as shown, and has the central portion which is adapted to fit over the edge of the bar provided with a cut away portion, at one end of which is hinged a latch 12 formed with an inclined forwardly extending tongue 13 adapted for engagement with a catch 14 to secure the latch in a closed position. The body member 10 is further provided with side portions 15 extending substantially at right angles to its body portion, and having triangular notches 16, one at each side of the formed integrally with the body member 10 from that;- portion -of the body anembeb which is cut away and is sufficiently resilient tobe'sprung to-permit the tongue 13 .of the latch to be released, hOWBVBIy'OlOVlOUSlY the catch might be formed separately of spring metal and be secured in-the proper. position for; engaging the latch tongue 13; As shown in Fig 2 the bar 11 hasv cut away: portions or notches 18 and 19 which serve respectively to accommodate the latching means: andthe fastening means forthe halter. .The notches 18 and 19 extend transversely across the bar 2 and the notchcl9 isada-pted toreceive a rope or halter 20 having a'knot tied in one endto prevent the rope slipping :through the notch. To facilitate:manipulation of the latch 12,- a' handlev 12 -may be. provided, which in the present, instance, is shown'as as an iron rodshaving eachend inserted through the body of the latch and expanded to-prevent removal.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 a latch 21 is provided having side portions bent at substantially right angles to the body portion thereof and with triangular notches, one on each side thereof, adapted for cooperation with a transverse notch 22 in a bar 23 to which the device is secured. The latch 21 is hinged to a metal securing member 24 which may be fastened to the bar 23 by screws or any other preferred means. This latch is adapted to beswung on its hinge into engagement with the bar to clamp a rope between the notch in the bar and the notches in the side portions of the latch. To secure the latch, in position I provide a pin 25 adapted to extend transversely through the outer end of the latch and through the bar.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art, that various modifications may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
2. A halter fastener comprising a body member having an intermediate face and side faces extending therefrom, said intermediate face having an opening of a width equal to the width of said face, registering notches in said side faces, a latch pivoted to said body member having notches adapted to be brought into position to clamp a halter in the notches of the body member, and means for securing said body member on a support, substantially as set forth.
3. A halter fastener comprising a bar having a notch in its face, a body member shaped to fit over the bar and having an opening over said notch, a latch pivoted at one end of said opening, opposed notches in said latch and said body member, said latch'being adapted to be swung into engagement with said body member to clamp an article between said opposed notches,
substantially as set forth.
4. A halter fastener comprising a bar having a notch in its face, a body member shaped to fit over the bar and having an opening over said notch, a latch pivoted at one end of said opening, opposed notches in said latch and said body member, said latch member to clamp an object therebetween and fastening means for said latch compristo be swung into engagement with the body inga resilient catch adapted to engage the end of the latch, said catch being formed integrally with the body member of the material removed to provide said opening, substantially as set forth.
6. A halter fastener comprising a body member having an intermediate face and side faces extending therefrom, said intern'iediate face having an opening of a width equal to the width of said face, registering notches in said side faces, a latch pivoted to said body member having notches adapted to be brought into position to clamp a halter in the notches of the body member, and resilient fastening means for said latch, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Scout Lake, Saskatche wan, C'anada'this 22d day of ApriL A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-four.
