SYLVANUS H. SHAW, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 120,334, dated October 24, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVANUS H. SHAW, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Sash-Supporters and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 in the drawing represents a sectional elevation, and Fig. 2 a top view of the extensible lever.
This invention relates to that class of sashfasteners which employs a spur-gear placed within a case in the window-frame and engaging with a rack attached to the edge of the sash, said spur-gear being controlled by means of a springpawl; and the invention consists in the combination, with such a case and gear, of a springpawl made extensible for a purpose hereinafter specified.

This modification is applicable, chiefly, to the top sash of windows, and in case that when the window is tightly closed the cogs d d d, &c., should not be brought in a proper position to admit of the pawl e engaging with them, the screw p is loosened and the adjustable end of the pawl e is extended suificiently to bear again st and hold the cogs d d d, &c.; the screw 19 is then tightened and the sash is thus securely fastened.
Having thus described my improvements,what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is-
