UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
TOI-IN VAN BADEN .AND N ORT/IAN VAN BADEN, OF MELVIN, MINNESOTA.
SKATE-SHARPENER.
Application filed April 3, 1916.
To all lwhom t may conce/vt.' l Be it known that we, J oI-IN VAN RADE and Nouan-iN VAN BADEN, both citizens of the TUnited States, residing at Melvin, in the county of Polk, State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Skate- Sharpener; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art .to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a skate sharpener, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which can be convenientiy carried in the pocket and which embodies novel features of construction `whereby7 the skate can be easily and quickly invention consists in certain novel combi-' nations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding,` of the invention. reference is to be had to the followin;I description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a combination skate key and Sharpener constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, portions being broken away and shown in section to illustrate more clearly the details of construction. Fig. 3 is an end view, portions being broken away and shown in section. Fig. et is a side elevation of a slightly modified form of the invention, portions being broken away and shown in section, and the sharpening` file being removed.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Specically describing the present embodiment of the invention. the numeral 1 designates a stem which has a polygonal Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1916.
Serial No. 88,497.
socket 2 in one end thereof, and is provided at its opposite end with a T shaped head 3. Integral rivet members -i project upwardly from opposite sides of the head 3, and engage the base of an elongated sheet metal jacket 5, said jacket being open at the top and one end thereof, and the sides 5 thereof having a stiff spring action for the purpose of engaging the sheet metal file receiving clip G, and causing the latter to securely grip the file 7. One end of the jacket 5 is partially closed by a tongue 5" which terminates short of the ends of the sides 5a.
The file 7 is preferably substantially square in cross section, having four operating faces which can be successively brought into operative position as they become worn by use. The clip 6 is formed of thin sheet metal and is open at the top and both ends. The sides (3a are contracted or deiiected inwardly toward each other above the le, thereby holding the file in position in the 'base of the clip, and providing a guide for4 directing the file in its back and forth movements across the skate. Vhen the clip 6 is forced in position within the jacket 5, the spring sides 5tL of the jacket forcibly engage the clip so as to cause it to securely grip the file. The tongue 5b engages one end of the clip 6, and the clip and le are securely gripped so that the stem l can be used as a handle in manipulating the file.
A slight modication is shown by Fig. it, in which the base of the tongue 5b is shown as formed with a small crimp 8 to it over and frictionally engage the end of the clip 6. The opposite end of the clip G is shown as having a small spring tongue 9 stamped therefrom for engagement with the end of the jacket 5. Such a construction would admit of the two members being securely locked together, and might be desirable under some circumstances.
The polygonal socket 2 at thev end of the stem of the T-shaped stock enables the device to be used as a skate key, so that the tool can be conveniently used either as a key for adjusting the skates, or as a sharpening device.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is zl. A tool of the character described, including a. T-shaped stock, an elongated jacket having the base thereof secured to the base of the T-shaped stock, said acket being open at the'top and being formed With stiff spring sides, a sharpening file, and a. file receiving clip of U-shaped cross section, the edges of the clip being converged over the file to forni a skate guide, and said clip being received Within the jacket and forcibly gripped by. the spring sides thereof so as to lock the file securely in operative position.
2. A tool of the character described, including a T-shaped stock, an elongated jacket having the base thereof secured to the head of the T-shaped stock, said acket being open at the top and at one end thereof and being formed with stiff spring sides, the opposite end of the jacket being provided with a tongue which terminates short of the ends of the sides, a sharpening file, and a sheet metal clip receiving the file and having a U-shaped cross section, the sides of the clip being converged over the file to form a skate guide, and said clip being adapted to be insorted within the jacket with one end thereof in engagement with the before mentioned tongue, the sides of the acket then forcibly engaging the clip and causing the saine to securely grip the ile.
8. il tool of the character described, including a T-shaped stock7 an elongated jacket having the base thereof secured to the base of the shaped stock, said acket being open at the top thereof and being formed with stiff spring sides, a sharpening file, a file receiving clip of U-shaped cross section, the edges of the clip being converged over the file to forni a skate guide7 and said clip being adapted to be inserted Within the jacket with the sides of the jacket forcibly engaging the clip and causing it to securely grip the ile7 and means for locking the clip in position Within the jacket.
4L. A tool of the character described, including a T-shaped stock, an elongated jacket having the base thereof secured to the base of the T-shaped stock, said jacket being open at the top and at one end thereof and being formed with stiff spring sides, the opposite end of the acket being provided With a tongue which carries an inwardly projecting lug at a point adjacent to the base thereof, a sharpening ile,and afile receiving clip of U-shaped cross section, the edges of the clip being converged over the file to form a skate guide, said clip being adapted to be inserted Within the acket with one end thereof received under the before mentioned lug of the end tongue, the sides of the jacket then forcibly engaging the clip and causing the saine to securely grip the file,`a11d a spring tongue upon the clip for engaging the end of the jacket opposite to that provided with the tongue.
In testimony whereof we have signed our naines to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
