Ilhlld g WALTER B. KELLOGG, OF SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN.
GAP AND FUSE HOLDER FOR DYNAMITE CARTRIDGES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALTER BERTRAND KnLLocc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Superior, in the county of Douglas and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cap and Fuse Holders for Dynamite Cartridges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cap and fuse holders for dynamite or giant powder blasting cartridges.
One object of the invention is to provide a cap and fuse holder for dynamite or giant powder cartridges which may be applied without perforating the paper casing or bor ing into the dynamite and which will securely hold the cap and fuse in position in contact with the charge at the most effective point at the end and center of the same.
Another object is to provide a holder of this character having an improved means for firmly holding a fuse of any size when engaged therewith and which is also adapted for holding an electric fuse.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and the arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly described and afterward specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure l is a plan view of my improved fuse and cap holder; Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the same; Fig. 3 is an edge view with the fastening points turned down to operative position; Fig. 4 is a side view partly in section of a blasting cartridge, showing the holder applied thereto, and holding a fuse and cap in engagement therewith.
My improved cap and fuse holder comprises a sheet metal plate 1, the ends of which taper from the center of the plate longitudinally to form holder attaching points 2. The plate when thus formed is of elongated diamond shape and the pointed ends thereof are adapted to be bent inwardly for engagement with the cartridge, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, whereby the holder is securely held in place.
In the center of the plate is a cap and fuse receiving opening 8, formed by cutting right Specification of Letters Patent.

angularly disposed slits in the metal and bending the slitted portions of the metal inwardly at an angle to form fuse engaging barbs 4;, which, when the fuse is inserted through the opening will grip the fuse and thus prevent the same from being retracted or drawn out of engagement with the holder.
One edge of each of the points 2 is preferably notched to form a barb 5 which when the points are engaged with the cartridge will catch into the latter and securely hold the points in place.
In applying the holder, the cap and fuse are inserted through the opening 3 to the desired distance and the cap engaged with the end of the cartridge. The tapered ends of the plate are bent over the opposite sides of the cartridge and the points 2 forced into the sides of the latter, thereby securely fastening the holder to the cartridge. When thus engaged, the holder will firmly secure the cap and fuse in engagement with the end of the cartridge and will protect the cap against any possibility of becoming dislodged while inserting the charge or cartridge.
By means of my improved holder, the necessity of crimping the cap upon the fuse is obviated except where the caps are to be used under water. My improved holder also obviates the necessity of lacing or tying the cap and fuse to the cartridge, and by forming the fuse opening in the holder as herein shown and described, fuses of different sizes may be engaged with the holder and when so engaged will be gripped by the barbs 4 and thus prevented from being casually disengaged from the holder or cap.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the construction and operation of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A cap and fuse holder for dynamite cartridges comprising a sheet metal plate having its ends tapered to form points adapted to be bent at right angles and forced into engagement with the cartridge, said plate having formed therein a centrally disposed cap and fuse receiving opening, and
formed on the ends of the plate, and barbs formed on said points. 7
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- DGSSQS- WVALTER B. KELLOGG.
\Vitnesses PHILIP A. GLAss, SADIE B. WEST.
