Description

:r. H. WILSON.
POCKET KNIFE AND OPENING KEY THEREFOR. APPLIOATION FILED P315, 1908,
915,007. Patented Mar. 9, 1909.
ATTORNEY I I JOHN H. WILSON, OF ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND.
POCKET-KNIFE AND OPENING-KEY THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 9, 1909.
Application filed February 5 1908. Serial No. 414,315.
T 0 all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN H. WiLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Annapolis, county of Anne Arundel, and State of Maryland, have lnvented a certain new I and useful Improvement in Pocket-Knives and Keys Therefor for Opening the Same, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in pocket knives and keys therefor for opening the same, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this description by which the blade may be opened by means of a key, thus avoiding the use of the finger nails and to so construct the handle of the knife in order that the key may be securely held therein when the knife is not in use.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of a knife showing the key hole in the blade, and a part of the handle broken away to show the key in place. Fig. 2, a section at the line :ca: of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 3, a section at the line yy of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4, a side elevation of one of the keys. Fig.
5, a plan view thereof. Fig. 6, a side elevation of a slightly modified form of key. Fig. 7, a side elevation of a knife showing my improvement.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents a pocket knife, having the blade 0 and the handle B. In the handle of the knife I cut an opening I), here shown as diagonal across the knife, but which may be lengthwise or in any other way desired,- into which is inserted the key E, having a flat spring F on the side thereof for holding it in place in said opening. When it is desired to open the blade of the knife the key would be withdrawn from the opening I) and placed within the opening G cut in the blade.
The key may be so made as to form a tooth pick upon one end, and the sides there of can be so cut as to form a finger nail file.
I11 Fig. 4 I have shown a key, which may be used as a )air of tweezers.
Of course do not wish to limit myself to the details here shown as the keys may be made in various shapes, although I have here shown only two.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
In a tool composed of a handle and a tool member pivoted thereto said handle having a recess formed in its body which extends diagonally across said body at points remote from the ends of the body and has its ends extending through opposite sides of said body, whereby the recessed interior is ac cessible from either of its ends, a key arranged in said recess and being of less length than the latter so as to be completely housed by the handle, and a thin short independent fiat spring having a diagonal disposition with respect to said element having one end secured to the latter and having its free end bearing against one of the walls formed by said recess.
In testimony whereof, have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. WVILSON.
Witnesses CHARLES A. OLIVER, M. E. WILsoN.
