MILK-GAN CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .nay a5, raie.
Application led February 2, 1916. Serial No. 75,761.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be. it known that I, ALVA L. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Kinley, in the county of Coos, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk- Can Closures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in.
. vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rfhe present invention is directed to impro vements in millr can closures, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that when in place the danger of the closure becoming accidentally disengaged is eliminated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure of this type so constructed that should the can be tampered with in an attempt to open the same during transportation the card bearing the consignees name will be mutilated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that when the closure is in place the can will be firmly sealed and practically air tight.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top pla-n view of a can equipped with the closure. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of F ig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the closure, the locking plate removed. Fig. a is a side elevation. Fig. 5
is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6--6 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the can having the usual neck 2 4 which terminates in an outwardly flared rim 3, said rim having its upper edge provided with an annular flange 1, said flange being provided with paired notches 5, the purpose of which will appear later.
5 The cover 6 is provided with an annular flange 7 which is adapted to engage the flange 4 of the neck, and is provided with diametrically disposed lugs 8 which are adapted to engage in t-hel depressions 9 formed in the flange 4, and when engaged said strip being further provided with an opening 13 and in which is engaged a bolt 11. Pivotally connected to the strip 11 by the bolt 1i is a locking plate 15, said plate having arcuate heads 16 which are provided with inwardly bent ears 17, said ears being adapted to pass through the notches 5 and upon partially rotating the plate 15, the ears will engage under the flange l of the neck, thus holding the cover 'firmly in place.
lThe locking plate 15 has formed therein a chamber 18, which terminates on one of the heads 1b in an angular chamber 19. F iXed in any suitable manner in the chamber 18 is a rod 20, said rod having an angular arm 21, which is engaged in the chamber 19 and has its end sharpened, as at 22. The arm 21 is resilient so that it will yieldably engage the surface of one of the heads 11 of the strip 10.
One of the heads 16 is provided with a sight opening 23 which is closed by the glass 21, whereby the card 25 having printed thereon the consignees name can be readily observed, said card being pasted on the adjacent head 11 of the plate 10 so as to be in the path of movement of the sharpened end 22 of the arm 21 when the locking plate 15 is rotated. Thus it will be seen that should a person attempt to open the can the sharpened end 22 of the arm 21 will mutilate the card.
The cover is placed in the neck after which the ears 17 of the heads 16 are passed through the notches 5, after which the locking plate is turned clockwise so that the sharpened end 22 of the arm 21 willride over the card 25, and at which time the lock* ing plate and strip are in direct alinement. Now, to open the can it is necessary to rotate the locking plate 15 so as to bring the ears 17 in registry with the notches 5. Thus it will be seen that when the locking plate is turned anti-clockwise that the sharpened end 22 of the arm 21 will remove or mutilate the card 25, thus indicating that the can has been opened in transit.
What is claimed is:`-
l. The combination with a can, of a cover therefor, a strip supported transversely kor the cover, a locking plate pivotally connect'- ed to the strip and having a resilient arm associated therewith adapted t0 slidably engage the strip When the locking plate is rotated, as yand or the purpose set forth.
2. The combination With a can 'having a neck, of a flange carried by the neck and having notches formed therein, a cover removably mounted in the neck and having a strip xed'transversely thereof, a locking platepivotally connected to the strip and having headsv formed upon its ends, earscarn red bythe heads for passage through said notches, an arm associated With therloeking yplate y and yieldably and slidably engaged with the strip, aV card associated with vthe strip and adapted to be engaged by said arm when moved in one direction to mutilate or remove the card, as andy for the purpose set forth., y n
