GEORGE O. STECKMAN AND ISAAC V. TROUTMAN, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NUT-LOCK.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE O. STECK- MAN and ISAAC V. TROUTMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Penns lvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nut locks, and has specially in view a hinged lock plate which is normally held in a nut-locking posit-ion by the pressure of a spring.
IVith the above and other objects in view, the invention contemplates the employment of base plate and a lock plate that are hinged together, a locking spring carried by, the base plate, and a bearing arm carried bythe lock plate, the parts being arranged so that when the lock plate is in a nut-holding position, the spring will exert a pressure against said bearing arm to retain the lock plate in engagement with the nut.
In carrying out the invention changes in details and structural arrangements may be resorted to, but a preferred and practical embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a top plan view of the invention, showing the saine in a nut-locking position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the line 2 2 Fig. l.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 10 designates a rail block, ish-plate, or other body upon which a base-plate 1l is supported. Said base-plate is provided at one edge with a holding flange l2 for engagement with said body l0. The opposite edge of the base-plate is provided with an integral, centrally located offstanding and rounded pivot ear 13 which supports a pivot pintle lil. The body 10 and base plate ll are provided with registering openings 15-16 for the fastening bolt 17 the end of which is threaded for the reception of a locking nut 18.
A lock plate 19 has a nut receiving opening 2O formed therein, which is of substantially the contour of the nut 18, and at one end is provided with rounded offstanding Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed .Tune 15, 1908.
Patented Mar. I5, 1910. Serial No. 438,535.
hinge knuckles 21-22 arranged in spaced relation to receive therebetween the pivot ear 13, and which also engage with the pivot pintle M carried by said pivot ear of the base plate. A bearing arm 23 is also carried by said lock plate and preferably located between the hinge knuckles 21-22, said bearing arm being in the form of a rounded or curved hood arranged over the ear 13 and the eXtreme end of which nor* mally rests upon the outer end 25 of a spring 26 which is riveted to the base pla-te l1. Said spring 26 is preferably of the well known flat leaf type and its outer end 25 is slightly upturned so that it will at all times be in contact with, and eXert an upward pressure against, the end of said bearing` arm 23.
To facilita-te manipulation of the lock plate 19, its free edge is provided with a lifting lip 27.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that as the spring is constantly exerting a pressure against the bearing arm of the lock plate, the latter will normally be retained in its nut locking position. And it will also be observed that through the described form of hinge connection between the base plate and the lock plate, there is little or no danger of the parts becoming disengaged notwithstanding theA jars the same would be subjected to when used in connection with railroads.
IVe claim as our invention A nut lock comprising a base plate, a lock plate having a hinged connection with the base plate and provided with an integral bearing arm having a rounded end arranged to constitute a hood, and a spring carried by the base plate and exerting a pressure against said bearing arm in a direction to hold the lock plate in locking position.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aliix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE O. STECKMAN. ISAAC V. TROUTMAN.
