Description
L. D. REED.
DOOR FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 26.1918.
1 77,754. Patented Sept. 3, 1918 UNITED STATES PATENT cur os.
LUKE DANIEL REED, or BURNHAM; ILLINOIS.
DOOR-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LUKE I). REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burnham, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in door fasteners and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connectionwith' sliding doors of the type employed in connection with freight cars or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a fastener of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the parts thereof coact in. an automatic manner to efi'ect the fastening of the door. V
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts'of my improved door fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my inventionwill hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a door fastener constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 38 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings P denotes a plate adapted to be secured to a vertical marginal portion of a sliding door D and which is provided adjacent its lower end with an outstanding block 1. The central portion of the block 1 is recessed as at 2 and the outer marginal portion of said recess is defined by the upstanding lug or. wing 3. Extending between the plate P and the upstanding lug or wing 3 is an end portion of a locking arm 4 and said end portion is provided with an eye Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1918. Application filed June 26, 1918. Serial No. 241,984.
5 throughwhich is disposed a pivot pin 6 arm with the upper face of the block 1 adjacent either end of the recess 2. This contact of the arm with either end portion of r the block 1 is facilitated by the recess 2 as the eye 5 of the arm 4 partially extends within said recess 2 as is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The outer or free end portion of the arm 4 is provided with a downwardly directed tonguev or lip 7 and the outer face of said tongue or lip 7 and a portion of the outer end of the arm 4 r are inwardlyand downwardly beveled as at 8 whereby the locking engagement of "the arm 4 is materially facilitated as Will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The upper face of the arm 4 at a point inwardly of the tongue or lip 7 is provided with an upstanding arm 9 provided therethrough with an opening 10 extending in the same general direction as the arm 4.
P denotes a plate suitably secured to a The plate Pv of the door opening to which the plate P. 1
is attached the bevel face 8 will contact with the block 11 and effect an upward swinging movement of the arm. 4 sufficient to permit the depending tongue or lip 7 to ride over the block 11 and have locking engagement therewith in a well known manner.
Pivotally engaged with the upper portion of the plate P and in vertical alinement with the block 11 is the upper end portion of the arm 14 which is normally positioned in a substantially vertical plane and which assumes its normal position by gravity. The lower end portion of the arm 14 is provided with the outstanding block 15 provided with an opening 16 extending in the same general direction as the opening 10 and adapted to register with said opening when the arm 4 is in looking engagement with the block 11. When the outer end portion of the arm 4 is passing over the block 11 the arm 14 will be swung upwardly but when the arm 4 drops to bring the depending tongue or 11p 7 m looking or working engagement with the block 11 the arm 14 will fall by gravity to its normal or vertical position and will overlie the top face of the arm 4 and thereby effectively hold the arm 4:
7 against upward swinging movement. A seal or other locking means maybe disposed through the registering openings 10 and 16. 7 My improved fastening device as herein disclosed is particularly adapted for use in connection with the sliding doors of freight force of an impact imposed thereon.
It will be understood that my improved device can be employed in connection with either side or end of the door as the occasions of practice may necessitate. In order to reverse the arrangement of the parts of my improved lock it is only necessary that the arm 4 be extended from the side of the plate P in accordance with the requirements of practice and this can readily be accomplished by removing the pivot pin 6. I
I also find it of importance to provide the eye 5 with an outstanding lip 17 substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the arm 4:. The lip 17 contacts'with the upper face of the block 1 and provides effective means for preventing the arm 4: from passing beyond the vertical.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a door fastener constructed in accordance with'my invention is particularly well adapted for vuse by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not the plate and pivotally supported thereby,
the extent of swinging movement of the arm being limited by contact of the arm with the block, the outer end portion of the arm being provided with a depending lip, an upstanding block carried by the arm inwardly of the lip, a second plate adapted to be secured to a stationary support provided with an outstanding block with which the depending lip of the arm is adapted to engage, a gravity arm swingingly supported by the second named plate above the block and adapted to contact with the upper face of the arm in advance of the block carried by the arm when said arm is in locking engagement with the block of the second named plate, the blockcarried by the first named arm and the gravity arm being provided with openings adapted to register when the gravity arm is in locking position relative to the swinging arm, said registering openings providing means whereby the gravity arm may be held against swinging movement.
In testimony whereof 'I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
