f C01VBINEDWINDOWSASH notnna AND LOCK.
To all whomit'may concemw Be it known that I, JorrN CHnIs'rorr-rnn NIoHoL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the town of Perth, county of Lanark, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, (whose post-ofiice address is Perth, Ontario,) having invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Window-Sash Holders and Locks, .do hereby declarethat the followingis a full," clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in combined window sash holders and looks, as described in'the present specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially of the novel arrangement and construction of parts whereby a plate is pivoted in unbalanced position on the window sash to bear against the window stop or frame.
The objects of the invention are to devise means of simple and durable construction whereby a window may be securely locked or held in any desired position.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention applied to a window when closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention showing the window held in open position.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
In the drawings, 1 is a metal plate here shown as oval in shape and having the lugs 2 and 3 formed at the opposite ends thereof. The plate has also the fingers 4 and 5 extending outwardly from one face thereof and on each side, the finger 5 and side 6 of the plate being heavier than the opposite side and finger 4: of the plate. The aforesaid lugs 2 and 3 have the orifices 7 and 8 therethrough respectively. The plate 1 is pivotally secured a proper distance from the stop 11 of the window frame by inserting a screw or bolt'through the orifice 8 in the lug 3 so that the plate 1 will be tilted into slightly angular position, though itrnay be secured to hang perfectly perpendicular as the additional weight on the side and lug 5 will cause the lug 4 to bear against the window stop as shown in Fig 2. The finger 4: of the plate is substantially triangular while the heavier finger is semicircular. ber of bolts or screws .12 are placed at intervals up the window stop and in combination with the plate pivotally fastened on the specification-of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 14, 1915. i itation filecl lebruary 26,1915. seri'ai No. 10,743. 7
window as hereinbeforeexplained will hold the window in any desired position. Thus as shown in Fig. 1 the plate is swung to the upper side of the pivot so that the heavier side and finger 5 are next the window stop and therefore bear with their additional weight against said stop andimmediately beneath the lowest screw thereby efiectually locking the Window in closed position, the
sharp edge of the semi-circular finger contacting positively with the under side of the screw and the window stop.
To raise the window to any desired position it is only necessary to swing the plate as shown in Fig. 2 whereby the heavier finger 5 bein on the outer side from the window stop lint stil below the pivot point of the plate tends to swing said plate in toward said stop and it will be understood that the window may now be raised to any position. As the window is raised the triangular shaped finger when going upwardly will pass over the heads of the screws the plate swinging out on its pivot to permit the clearance of the finger 4: but when the win dow is stopped and lowered until the finger 4 contacts with one of the screws on the upper side thereof said window will be held as the line of bearing between the finger L and the pivot point of the plate wedges the said plate into contact with the screw as shown in Fig. 2, the heavier side and finger 5 of the plate always swinging the said plate in against the window stop to engage with a screw head unless said plate is held clear when the window may be lowered as desired.
The lug 3 is the only one used when the fastener is applied, to the right hand side of the window, but when it is desired to place the fastener on the left side or to place two fasteners on, then the plate on the left side is pivotally fastened by inserting a screw or bolt through the orifice 7 in the lug 2, that is turning the plate end for end the requirements being that the heavier finger and side of the plate is always on the outer side of the window stop when the plate is in a pendant position. Furthermore when the window is in a raised position and retained by the stop as shown and described, and it is desired to lower the same it is only necessary to turn the plate around on the pivot till it is in its upper position and against the window stop, when the window may be lowered to any desired position, the plate with the lug next the window stop passing all screws automatically, until eventually if the window is completely closed the lug on the plate is beneath the lowest screw securely locking the window as hereinbefore fully described. 7
What I claim is: v
1. The combination with a window sash and frame thereof, of a plurality of stud screws secured to said frame'at intervals throughout the height thereof and a plate of substantially oval shape, and pivotally secured at one end thereof to said sash and having a latch finger projecting outwardly therefrom at each side, one of said latch fingers and the corresponding side of said plate being heavier than the remaining finger and side.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for substantially oval ring shape and having a lug formed at each end with an orifice therethrough and a latch finger projecting upwardly from one side and substantially'triangular in cross section and a latch finger projecting upwardly from the opposite side and heavier than the aforesaid finger and substantially semi-circular in cross section.
Signed at the city ofOttawa, Province of Ontario, Canada, the 31st day of December 1914.
