To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS A. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Horine, Jefferson county, Missouri,
have invented a new and useful Padlock, of
the two members together and in engage-- ment with the member to which the lock is to be attached and means for supporting and protecting the guard in position to prevent opening of the lock.
Other objects will appear from the following description in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention and in which- Figure 1 is a front side elevation of the lock having the protecting guard mounted therein. Fig. 2 is a similar view' with the protecting guard removed. Fig. 3 is a rear side elevation. Fig. 4. is a view of the lock open. Fig. 5 is a similar view with a part broken away to illustrate the spring catch member. Fig. 6 is a view looking toward one side edge of the lock. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 7-7 of Fig. 4E. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the members by which the protecting guard is retained in place. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the protecting guard.
The lock consists of a member 1 pivotally connected with a cooperating member 2, preferably by means of an eyelet 3 to which the supporting element 4 may be connected. The two members are pivotally mounted adjacent to one end thereof and at their opposite ends are provided with overlapping projections 5 which, in the form shown, constitute a ring when brought together. The extremity of each of the overlapping projections 5 abuts against the shoulder 6 on the corresponding projection so that, when the lock is closed, it is practically impossible to force any implement between the overlapping projections'to separate them. As an additional element of strength the member 1 may be provided on its rear side with an overlapping flange 7 which engages against the side of the member 1 when'the lock is closed, thus reinforcing the pivot and positively preventing the application of any undue strength upon the pivot when the look 1s 1n use, or when any attempt is made to force the two members apart.
The members 1 and 2 are formed with matching recesses at the bottom of which are the locking devices. The locking devices consist of a spring hook 8, one end of which is rigidly secured within a recess 1n the member and the opposite end of which projects beyond the inner side edge of said member 1 and is. provided with an engaging hook adapted to engage with an appropriate portion on the member 2 and thus lock the two members together. An additional recess 9 is formed at the bottom of the large recess in the member 2. A shoulder 10 is formed on one side wall of the recess 9 in position to be engaged by the hook 8, (Fig. 2) when the members 1 and 2 are brought together, and when so positioned the lock is closed and can only be opened by releasing the hook 8 from the shoulder 10 to enable the members 1 and 2 to swing apart upon the pivot 3.
A plate 11 is rigidly secured to the member 1 over the hook 8 and said plate projects beyond the side edge of said member 1, so that when the lock is closed said plate overlaps a portion of themember 2 within the large recess therein covering the recess 9 and the shoulder 10.
A plate 12 is secured to the face of the member 2 by suitable elements 18. Said plate is formed with a rounded depression in its inner edge and has. an arcuate flange 14 integral therewith and extending into the large recess within the member 2. A similar plate 15 is rigidly secured to the member 1 by suitable binding elements 16 and is i also formed with a rounded recess in its inner edge. and has an arcuate flange 17 similar to the flange 13.
When the lock is closed the inner edges of the members 1 and 2 are brought close together and the inner edges of the plates 12 and 15 and the flanges 14 and 17 abut against each other so that the recess within the two members is bordered by a wall composed of the arcuate flanges on the plates 12 and 15. The flanges on said plates terminate a slight distance from the plate 11,
thus leaving a space 18 between the inner ends of said flanges and the plate 11'. The space 18 is adapted to receive the edge of a disk 19 composed of any suitable material so that when the lock is closed the disk will be securely retained in position over the.
plate 11, thus preventing access to the releasable hook 8 without defacing the said disk 19. The disk 19 may contain any suitable symbol or indicia representing any desired marking, so that it may be positively determined or known when the lock has been opened or tampered with.
The disk 19 may be composed of any suitable material and when the disk is removed the lock may be opened by passing an implement through a hole 20 into engagement with the hook 8 and actuating the implement so as to disengage said hook from the shoulder 10 to enable the two members of the lock to swing apart. The disk 19 is applied within the lock oy placing the same upon the plate 11 and engaging the edge of the disk under the flange 17 thereby supportingthe disk in position so that when the member 2 is ClOSGCl upon the member 1, the edge of the disk which is beyond the plate 11, engages under the flange 14 on the member 2, securing the disk in proper position so that it can only be removed by de facement. In this way indication will always be given when the lock has been opened.
A padlock of the character described is highly efficient and useful as a lock for mail pouches, boxes, desks and other inclo sures where it is desired to convey information of'the fact whenever the inclosure has been opened.
The use of elements such as the disk 19 with the special markings thereon prevents substitution of such elements, since it is practically impossible for an unauthorized person to obtain accurate duplicates of the disks having the special markings placed in accordance with a predetermined plan or arrangement.
It will be understood that there may be variations within equivalent limits without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Therefore, without restricting myself to identical features of construction, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesis:-
l. A padlock comprising two relatively movable members, one of which is provided with a relatively large recess and with a relatively smaller recess at the bottom of the large one, a shoulder formed on one of the side walls of said small recess, a hook carried by the other member adapted to extend into said small recess to effect releasable engagement with said shoulder, a plate attached to said second mentioned member arranged to extend into the large recess in through whichsaid hook maybe engaged for the purpose of disengaging the same from said shoulder, a pivot connecting said two members at one end thereof, overlapping shackle portions at the opposite end of said members arranged to prevent forcing of said members laterally in one direction and means in connection with one of said members for engaging the other to prevent forcing of said members laterally in the opposite direction.
2. A padlock, comprising two relatively movable members, an element pivotally uniting said members at one end, overlapping engaging portions rigid with the opposlte ends of saidmembers respectively, engageable lock elements supported by said members intermediate of the ends thereof separate from said engaging portions and for supporting a guard to prevent release of said hook from said shoulder.

A padlock, comprising two pivotally united members, overlapping engaging portlons on said members adapted to be engaged wlth the object to be locked, a flange on one of said members engaging with the other member to prevent lateral movement of said members with respect to each other, a hook movably supported by one of said members, and a shoulder rigidly supported by the other member in position to be engaged by said hook, said hook and Said shoulder being entirely separate from said overlapping portion.
5 A padlock, comprising two pivotally united members, overlapping engaging portions on said members preventing lateral movement of said members with respect to each other in one direction, an additional device carried by one of said members and engaging the other and preventing lateral movement of said members with respect to each other 1n the opposite direction, a hook movably supported by one of said members, and a shoulder rigidly supported bythe other member in position to be engaged by said hook to hold said overlapping portions in position overlapping each other.
6. A padlock comprising two cooperating members pivotally united at one end, overlapping engaging portions rigid With the opposite ends of said members respectively, and arranged When overlapped to prevent forcing of said members laterally in one direction, an additional device preventing forcing of said members laterally in the 0pposite direction, a movable hook supported by one of said members, a shoulder rigidly supported by the other member and arranged to be engaged by said hook When said members are side by side, a plate covering said hook and provided With a hole affording access to disengage said hook from said shoulder, and a device for closing said hole to prevent release of Said hook.
7. A padlock, comprising tWo pivotally united members adapted to be locked side by side, a hook carried by one of said members, a shoulder formed on the other memher in position to be engaged by said hook, a plate supported by one of said members and having a hole therein through which said hook may be engaged for purposes of disengaging the same from said shoulder to open the hook, a shield adapted to be positioned over said plate to cover said hole to prevent access to said hook, and means on said members for preventing removal of said plate.
