d rt/5 -I mawl'fow HENRY F. BROWN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
SHIELD R COVER AND LOCK FOB GASOLENE-FEED VALVES.
Application led .T une 4. 1918.
il 0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin, State'of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Shield or Cover and Lock for Gasolene-Feed Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combination shield or cover and lock for gasolene feed valves of gasolene tanks of automobiles, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this kind particularly adapted for protecting the feed valve and preventing unauthorized persons from tampering with the valve. In other words to provide a safety lock and shield.
A further object of the inventionis the provision of improved means for mounting the housing on the gasolene tank, for protecting the hand Wheel 0n the end of the valve stem.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a gasolene tank showing the improved cover or housing as applied thereto for protecting the hand Wheel of the feed valve stem.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the tank showing the needle valve, and illustrating the housing or cover as applied to the tank.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the tank, showing the housing applied, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates a conventional form of gasolene tank which may be constructed of any suitable material and of any suitable shape, and provided with a filling opening 2, provided with a closure 3. A feed pipe from the tank to the carbureter (not shown) is provided. This pipe 4 is coupled to the bottom of the tank, by means of the threaded plug 5 and the fitting 6, which are threaded together as shown. The end portion of the angle end of the pipe 4 has a flange 7 clamped between the plug and the fitting. The

plug is threaded into the bottom of the tank and is provided with a passage 8, which communicates with the passage through the pipe 4. The plug 5 has al needle valve seat t), with which the needle valve 10 coperates to control the outflow of the gasolene. The upper part of the valve stem is threaded at 11 through the plugs 12, which is threaded through the top wall of the tank 1. The upper end of the valve stem has a. hand wheel 13. A housing or cover 14 engages over the hand wheel and is supported on the top wall of the tank. The housing has a cover 15 hinged at 16 and is provided with a conventional form of combination lock 17. The bolt 18 of the combination lock when thrown in locking position has its angle end 19 engaging under the rib 20, thereby holding the cover locked, hence preventing an unauthorized person from tan'xpering with the hand wheel for the purpose of manipulating the valve. The bottom of the housing has a flanged opening. In other words the lower marginal port-ions of the side walls of the housing has an inturned marginal flange 2l. This fiange is provided with key-hole shaped openings 22. Headed pins 23 are mounted in apertures 24 of the top of the tank, so that their heads 25 are adjacent the under surface of the top of the tank. These pins are capable of being turned or rotated, and their upper ends have right angle extending arms 26. When the pins are disposed so that the arms 26 will register with the elongated parts of said key-hole shaped openings or slots, the pins will pass through the circular parts of the slots or openings, after which the pins may be rotated, moving the arms out of registry with the' slots, hence securely locking the housing on the tank. Sufficient friction is insured between the arms 26 and the upper face of the marginal flan e 21, so as to insure a binding action, to ho d the cover Secure and against movement, incident to jarring the tank. It is to be observed that since the housing is so securely locked and `the cover locked by the combination lock, tampering with the valve by an unauthorized person is prevented.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is In combination with a gasolene tank having an outlet pipe and a needle valve therefor, a housing to house the hand wheel of the valve stem, said housing having a hinged cover provided with a combination lock, and
means for securing the housing detachably on the tank, said means ooinprlsing a marginal flange at the bottom of the housing,
said flange having key-hole' shaped openings,
L headed pins mounted in the top of the tank 10 ment with the elongated portions of the openings to lock the housing securely in place.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
