JOHN J'- COMER, OF NEW YQRK, N. Y.
LOCK FOR GAS-GGCKS.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Feb. h 1%12.
Application filed January 18, 1917;. Serial 1 0. 603,245. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, JorrnJ. COMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Queens, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and. limproved Look for Gas-Cocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description v The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lock for gas coclrs, which is very simple in construction, not liable easily to get out of order, and urrnnged to permit the owner of a building, left, or other place, to lock the gas cool: opening" or closing by unauthorized per-sons. For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a keycontrolled bolt mounted. to slide in a casing forming an integral of the body of the cook, the said ho L1 being adapted to engage recesses for: in the plug of the gas cock inside of seat I" the the some to hold the said plug; agains turning, either when turned on or when turned off.
A practical embodiment of the invention represented in the uccoinpnnying forming a part of this specification, in
which snnils characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
igure l is a sectional side elevation of cock provided with the lock; Fig. i'
ectional plan view of the some on no of l; and 3 is a view of the some.
The body A of the gas cock is provided with the usual bore B terminating at one end in an inlet B and at the other en r2 seat C extends through t m to l' e ll an outlet i, hod A and intersects the core B, and in me suid. sect is mounted turns tapering plug; l), provided with a port D adopted to connect disconnect with the bore B, connect the inlet with the outlet or to .3. i it,
plug D is provided at its outer end with on oilset l) for the reception of a handle or similar device employed. for turning the plug B into on open or on extended position.
On the body A'is formed an integral look casing E in which is mounted to slide a bolt A ressin through the inner wall of the cnsing E into the seat C for engagement with a recess G or G forlnedin the peripheral face of the plug D. The recesses G and G are so arranged reletiveto the port D that when the letter is in the closed "position shown in the drawings then the bolt cngages the recess G, and when the plug 1: has been given a quarter turn to bring it into open position with the port D in register with the bore B, then the said bolt engages the other recess G.
The bolt F is provided at one side with spaced notches and is locked either in a ton ward or a retracted position by tumbler H provided with means for engaging either of said notches, the tumbler being mounted to slide in'the casing E and pressed on by a spring I, the said tumbler H and the bolt l being; controlled by or key J adopted to be inserted through a keyhole E formed in the removable cover E of the casing E.
When the several parts are in the position shown in the drawings, the plug D is locked in s closed position by the bolt Fengeging the recess G, and when it is desired to open the D the operator uses the key to 'etrs. ,tthe bolt F to permit of turning the slug i) into an open position, and when this no the bolt 1 is moved outward by l to engage the bolt with the recess G, and thus loci; the plug 13 in open position.
it understood that the owner of the cool; or the building in which this gas cock located, is in possession or the l hence the plug D cannot be turned by an unauthorized person.
It will be noticed that the bolt F is concooled and is not accessible, and the casing l lhv forming an integral part of the hotly A :snnot readily be broken and the effectiveness of the look destroyed, as is the case with separate casings and bolts arranged outside of the body A for locking the hey D Y in place. 1
thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1, A gas cool-t, comprising;- body provided with a bor having an inlet and an outlet, cnintegrnl. seat formed in the said hotly, and an integral lock casing provided at its top with sv cover having a key hole for the insertion of o key, a plug mounted to turn in the said sent and hsvin a port adopted to register with the said inlet the said outlet, the said plug hein; providecl sit its outer end with an oil set tor the reception of a device for turning the plug, the plug having peripheral recesses within the solo. seat at right angles to each other,
a keycontrolled bolt mounted to slide in the .said lock casing and adapted to pass through the inner Wall of the easing into the said seat to engage the said plug recess in register at the time with the said bolt to the bolt in forward or retracted position.
2. A gas cook, comprising a body having an inlet, an outlet, a plug seat and an intev gral' lock casing provided at its top With a cover, the latter halving a key-hole for the insertion of a key, a plug mounted to turn in the said seat and having a port adapted to register with the said inlet and outlet, the
said plug having peripheral recesses Within the said seat at right angles to each other, a bolt mounted to sllde in the said lock casing and adapted to engage either of the said plug recesses to lock the plug in closed or open position, the said bolt being provided at one side With spaced notches, a springpressed tumbler mounted to slide in the said lock casing below the bolt and provided With means for engaging either of said- .notches to lock the said bolt in forward or retracted position, and a key adapted to be inserted through the said key-hole for controlling the said tumbler and bolt.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscriblng wltnesses.
JOHN J. COMER.
