To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CATnLLo LANDRE and Snssa B. LUCIAN, a subject of the King of Italy, and a citizen of the United States, respectively, and both residents of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fountain-Combs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to a class of combs adapted to be employed when treating the hair of a person.

Our invention has for its object primarily to provide a device, or comb designed to be utilized as a medium for permitting a medicated liquid, or dye, or oil to be conveniently and effectually applied to the hair and upon the scalp of the head of a person when undergoing treatment for the-purpose of cleaning the scalp as well as promoting the growth of the hair, and which is adapted when in use to distribute the liquid evenly and in proper proportions through the strands of the hair and upon the scalp. This is accomplished mainly by providing a back composed of a shell. and an inner casing to provide a reservoir for containing the liquid, and in the casing is detachably mounted a suitable number of integrally formed teeth to which the liquid from the reservoir is fed for distribution upon the hair and scalp when the comb is in use.

Another object of the invention is to provide a gripping element for yieldingly retaining the teeth in the casing in a manner whereby the teeth may oscillate transversely with respect to the comb; andv still another object of the invention is to provide one or more yielding feeders which serve to permit the liquid from the reservoir to be delivered to the teeth in suitable proportions.

A furtherobject of the invention is to provide a locking element for holding the teeth against oscillatory movement as occasion requires; and still a further object of the invention is to provide afountain comb which is susceptible of being made in various sizes either in plain or fanciful designs.

With these and other objects in view the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly broken away, of one form of comb embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the form of integrally formed teeth used in conjunction with the comb. Fig. 3 is an end view of the comb shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4; is an end view of the teeth shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an inverted perspective view of the shell of the .back of the comb. The device, or fountain comb has an elongated back 10 composed of a shell 11 which is preferably tapered as viewed transversely to provide a substantially rectangular underside, as 12, and in this underside of the shell is an elongated opening 13. Also in the underside of the shell 11 adjacent to one end thereof is a threaded opening, or inlet 1ft adaptedto be closed by a threaded cap 15.

Within the shell 11 of the back of the comb and around the edge of the elongated opening 13 is soldered, or otherwise secured an elongated casing 16 which is preferably similar in shape, but of less dimension than the shell 11 so as to provide between the casing and said shell a reservoir 17 adapted to contain a medicated liquid, or dye, or oil for treating the scalp and the hair of the head of a person, and the liquid is admitted into the reservoir through the inlet 14 after removing the cap 15 therefrom. The underside of the elongated casing 16 is open, at 18, and at spaced intervals in corresponding parts of the edge of each of the side walls of said casing may be pairs or notches, as 19. Upon one of the side walls interiorly of the casing 16 be soldered, or otherwise held one part of a yielding gripping element, or catch 20 of preferably the form of a plate of spring metal which is slightly curved so that itsupper-edge extends some distance toward the center of the casing- Also at spaced intervals interiorly of the casing 16, and transversely thereof, are a number of partitions 21 which are of sufficient lengths to extend approximately midway of the side wall of the casing for providing a plurality of pockets'22.

Adapted to be detachably mounted in the casing 16 of the back are a number of I integrally formed teeth 23 which provide the comb proper of the device. As shown, the teeth 23 extend in a row in spaced relation to eachother from a common strip 24, and in one, or both surfaces of said strip at the junctures of the teeth thereof, are a number of vertically disposed grooves 25 I which serve to permit the liquid to be fed from the reservoir 17 .to the teeth of the comb, as will be hereinafter more fully eX- plained. -Projecting from the strip 24 in janopposite direction to the teeth 23 is a bar 26 having a plurality of spaced slots '27 disposed fromits free longitudinal edge toward the grooves 25, and upon one surface of said bar may be one or a number of plates, as 28, which are adapted to be en- -gaged by the free edge of the yieldingcatch 20forremovably holding the bar and said teethin the casing 16 when inserted therein j as'wellas permitting the teeth to oscillate transversely with respect to'the. comb.

The locking ele-' 'ment 33 is composed of two spaced parallel bars 34 and 34 which correspond in lengths to the open underside 18 of the casing 16. Connecting the ends of the bars 34 and 34 are substantially W-shaped springs 35 and 36 both of which are disposed at right allgles with respect to said bars, and said springs are of lengths approximately equal to the depth of the casing 16 so that when the springs are positioned in the casing, as shown in Fig. 1, the bars 34 and 34 will extend beyond the underside of the back 10 of the comb. Approximately centrally of each of the bars 34 and 34 are notches 37 and 37 for reception of two lugs 38 and 38 provided upon the free ends of the arms 39 and 39 of'a substantially U-shaped slide 40 which is movably held upon the underneath surface of the shell 11 so as to be adjusted longitudinally thereof.

In practice the bar 26 of the teeth 23 of the comb is directed between the bars 34 and 34 so as to be disposed in the casing 16 for one of the plates 28 to be engaged by the yielding catch 20. By previously moving the slide 40 so that the lugs 38 and 38 are opposite the notches 37 and 37 the teeth23f are free to oscillate in directions transversely with. respect to the back 10 when the comb is being directed through the hair of a person. The set of the plates 30 or 30 of the feeders 29 which is in the path of the movement of the teeth will thereby be yieldingly moved in a like direction, and part of the liquid from the reservoir 17 of the back 10 will be admitted in the grooves 32 of these plates. hen the teeth 23 are moved in an opposite direction the liquid contained in the grooves 32" will be deliveredinto the path of the teeth, and the grooves 32 of the opposite set of the plates of the feeders 29 will then receive liquid from the reservoir 17 in a like manner to feed to the teeth 23. The feeders 29 lie in such close proximity to'the teeth that liquid carried by the grooves 32 spreads over the plates, and finds its way upon the comb teeth as the latter are manipulated through the hair. When it is desired to utilize the device similarto using an ordinary comb, for instance when massaging the scalp of a person, the slide 40 is moved so that the lugs 38 and 38 of the arms thereof will be moved out of registration with the notches 37 and 3730f the bars 34 and 34 and bear directly against the latter to lock the teeth 23 against oscillation.

In the foregoing description, we have embodied the preferred form of our invention, but we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves thereto, as we are awarethat modifications may be made therein Without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore we reserve to ourselves the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent z 1. In a fountain comb, a hollow casing forming a liquid reservoir and provided with a comb receiving portion, valves in said reservoir, an oscillatable comb in said comb receiving portion and arranged to operate said valves to supply liquid to said comb upon oscillation thereof, and means for locking said comb against oscillation.

2. In a fountain comb, a hollow casing forming a liquid reservoir, valves in said reservoir, an oscillatable comb, and means connecting said comb to said valves for operating the latter to supply liquid to the former upon oscillation thereof.

3. In a fountain comb, a liquid reservoir, and an oscillatable comb in combination with valve means operatively connected With said comb to supply liquid to the latter upon oscillation of said comb.

4:. The combination with a hollow casing forming a liquid reservoir, of valves leading therefrom, and a removable oscillatable comb mounted on said reservoir and connected With said valves to operate the same and receive a supply of liquid therefrom upon oscillation of said comb.
