Description

(No Model.)
.J. J. ASHBURNER.
BRUSH.
No.-38 1,749. I 'PatentedApr. 24, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH JOHN ASHBURNER, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 381,749, dated April 24, 1888. Application filed October 5, 1887. Serial No. 251.527. (No model.) Patented in England May 18, 1886, No. 6,687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH' JOHN Asa- BURNER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes,
(for which a patent was granted to me in Great Britain May 18, .1886, numbered 6,687,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brushes; and it consists in an improved construction whereby I am enabled to provide a brush capable of holding more water than can be held in the ordinary brush.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the under side of the stock of a toothbrush with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is-a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the bristles inserted.
In the drawings, A represents the usual stock, and b 'b the holes for the insertion of the bristies. In using brushes with water it is con venient to have them contain as much water as possible, and to this end I provide the brush side of the stock A with recesses or receptacles d d d, as shown in Fig. 3. These receptacles will hold a considerable amount of water and will supply it to the bristles, keeping them wet for a considerable time. This construction allows of a better rinsing of the mouth in the use of tooth-brushes, and its use in other kinds of brushes will be readily seen. When these recesses or receptacles are used, it is necessary to dry the brush thoroughly after using,
or the moisture which is liable to remain in these receptacles will cause the brush to deteriorate rapidly. I secure this drying of these receptacles and the brush by means of theholes or apertures c c c, which pass entirely through the stock. These holes admit air freely to the bristles and to the receptacles in the under side of the stock, so that the moisture which may be retained by the receptacles will be quickly evaporated and the brush thoroughly dried.
I have shown and described my invention as applied to a tooth-brush; but it will be obvious that my improvements are applicable to other brushes, such as nailbrushes, hair and other toilet brushes, also for stable-brushes, and all other b1 ushes to be used in connection with liquids.
I am aware that it has been proposed to construct a brush having a flexible back with apertures passing entirely through said flexible back for the purpose of cleansing the brush more readily and rendering the back more flexible; but this construction I do not claim.
\Vhat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A brush provided with recesses in the stock of the same for the reception of water, substantially as described.
