APPLICATION I 'ILED DEC-2, 1915- A Y Patented June 20, 1916.
A INVI/LI'NTOR WIN/E88- v A TTOHNEV is E OTTO F. G. BOEKER, OF SEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT.
CIGARETTE-BOX AND MATCH-CARRIER.
arsmeo.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20, 1916.
Application filed December 2, 1915. Serial No. 6 1,624.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Or'ro F. G. BonKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seymour, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Cigarette Boxes and Match Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a cigarette box of normal size which shall also carry sufficient paper matches for lighting the cigarettes in the box.
I am aware that various combined ciga rette and match boxes have been placed upon the market, but so far as I am aware, in every instance it has been necessary to increase the size of the box more or less to accommodate the matches. My present invention enables me to produce, at but slight expense over ordinary boxes, a box no larger than an ordinary box, but also carrying sufficient matches for the purpose required. This I accomplish in the manner I will now describe, referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and using reference characters to indicate the several parts Figure l is a perspective view of my novel cigarette box and match carrier, as completed and ready to receive the cigarettes; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a slightly variant form of my novel cigarette box and match carrier.
10 denotes the box which is of ordinary construction, and 11 the lid hinged thereto as usual. Both box and lid are made of ordinary box board and are covered with ornamental paper, indicated by 12. This ornamental cover of both box and lid is in common use upon cigarette boxes, but the cover of the lid. becomes an important feature of my present invention.
13 denotes a recess which is cut through the lid before the cover is placed thereon, and receives the paper matches, indicated by 14. As shown in Fig. 1, these matches are made from the stock of the lid itself. The stock within the outlines of the recess is detached on three sides, leaving it attached on one side, and is simultaneously slit into match blanks, which are bent outward and dipped to complete the matches. The cover when placed on the lid covers the matches, which lie in the recess in the lid and, in use, between the cover and the contents ofthe box. If preferred, however, the stock within the outlines of the recess may be entirely removed'and a strip of paper matches placed in the recess and secured therein in any suitable manner, as by placing a strip 15, which may or may not be a striker strip, over the butt of the match strip. In Fig. 1, I have shown a striker strip 16 on the end of the 'box. It is of course immaterial, so far as the present invention is concerned, where the striker strip is placed. It is likewise immaterial whether the matches are arranged transversely of the lid, as in Fig. 1, or longitudinally thereof, as in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A box and lid of the character described, provided with an ornamental cover, the lid being provided with a recess which is closed on the outer side by the cover, the stock within the outlines of the recess being left attached upon one side and being split into match blanks, which after dipping lie within the recess.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
OTTO F. G. BOEKER.
