To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, MILICI-I D. YovIoH, a citizen of the -United States, residing at Gary, in the county of Lake, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in hoods, and has for its object to provide a device of this character adapted to be placed over the head of the person working inpowder factories to protect the same from gases and dust.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hood of this character, so constructed that the wearer can observe the progress of the work, and at the same time to protect the head from poisonous gases and dust.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a hood so constructed that the same can be worn with comfort.
Vith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. A is a sectional view on line 47-42 of Fig. 1.
The hood consists of a frame 1, which is formed from light wood, and consists of a back frame 2, and a side frame 3. The forward ends of the lower bars 1 of the side frame 3 are connected by across bar 5, while the bars 6 of the back frame 2 are connected by spaced bars 7, the purpose of which will appear later.
It will be noted that the bars 8 of the side frame are inclined, so that the top 9, when secured thereto is also arranged in inclined relation. Sides 10 are connected to the side frames 2, while a back 11 is secured to the back frame 1. A front 12 is attached to the forward ends of the bars A and 8 of the side frame, and to the cross bar 5, said front having an opening 18 formed therein, which is normally closed by a hingedly supported door 14, which has a glass plane carried thereby, so that the wearer can see when the hood is in place.
The bottom 16 of the hood is provided with an opening 17, which is engaged around the neck of the wearer, and associated with the opening 17 is an apron 18, which is adapted to engage around the neck of the wearer to exclude gases or dust.
A head engaging band 19 is provided and is fixed to the spaced bars 7, said band being formed from metal, and may be padded in any suitable manner to add comfort to the wearer. A resilient metal plate 20 is provided and has its lower end fixed to the forward part of the band 19, and its upper end fixed to the interior of the top 9, said plate serving to relieve the head of vibration.
The door 14 is provided with a keeper 21, which is adapted to be engaged by the catch 22 carried by the front 12, whereby said door may be locked when the hood is in use, or may be opened so that the wearer can be supplied with fresh air, when desired. A button 23 is carried by the front, and is adapted to be swung under one cornerof the door so as to hold the same in its raised position.
Straps 2A are provided, and have their rear ends suitably connected to the rear corners of the bottom 16, and their other ends being engaged by the buckles 25,which are carried by the forward corners of the bottom, said straps being adapted to be passed under the arms of the wearer so as to hold the hood in place.
What is claimed is 1. A hood of the class described comprising a casing, a door hingedly connected to the front of the casing, a head engaging band having one side fixed to the rear of the casing, a resilient plate having one end fixed to the band and the other end fixed to the top of the casing, the bottom of the casing having a restricted neck receiving opening formed therein.
