Patented May 23, 1916.
Application filed June 5, 1915. Serial No. 32,262.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HARRY R. Hms'r, citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a clamp, and particularly to a clamp adapted for. attaching tips to billiard or pool ones.
The object of my invention is to construct a clamp which may be securely held upon a cue, and which is provided with means for compressing the leather tip, which is glued upon the end of the cue and also for holding the tip so compressed until the glueis dry and a further object of my invention is to so construct the clamp that a tip may be attached to a cue which has been cut oil' at an angle and therefore not having an end surface which is perfectly true and at right angles to the length of the cue.
Referring to the accompanying drawings; Figure 1, is a front elevation of my improved clamp, showing the same attached to the end of a cue; Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the clamp; Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the clamp; Fig. 4, is a plan view of the clamping disk, detached; and Fig. 5, is a section on line 55 Fig. 2.
In the drawings in which like references refer to like parts, 1 and 2 are the side clamping members, which are integral with the head 3. The side clamping members 1 and 2 are provided with ribs 4' and 5 for stiffening them. A detachable ring or disk 6, is provided, as shown in Fig. 4. Said disk is adapted to embrace the side members 1 and 2, and clamp them upon the tapering end portion of the cue 7 as shown in Fig. 1. The disk 6 rides upon the ribs 4 and 5 of the side members 1 and 2. As the ribs are larger at their lower ends the disk 6 will press the' side members together as the disk is forced downwardly upon the ribs. There are provided three sets of oppositely disposed recesses 8-8, 99 and 10-10, in the disk 6, forming three different size openings, as shown in Fig. 4. The disk 6 is constructed in the above manner so that the different size thumb screw 13 is mounted in said bushing 12 and carries at its inner end a cup-shaped washer 14, which is loosely secured upon the end of the screw 13. By loosely mounting the cup-shaped washed 14 upon the screw 13, the said washer may adjust itself at any angle'which the tip 15 may assume when it is placed upon the end of a cue having an imperfectly formed end surface.
The side members 1 and 2 are made smaller adjacent'to the head 3, as shown in Fig.3, which gives them flexibility and also gives sufficient room to insert the tip 15 after the clamp has been placed upon the cue.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The side members of the clamp are placed upon the tapering end of a cue, the locking disk is placed over the clamp and forced downwardly until the side members tightly impinge the cue. Before the disk is forced upon the side members it may be rotated until the proper size opening in the disk is brought into alinement with the ribs 4 and 5 of the clamping members. The thumb screw is unscrewed so that the tip 15 may be inserted and adjusted upon the end of the cue, then the thumb screw is turned to press the cup-shaped washer tightly upon the tip and securely hold the tip in place until the glue between the tip and the cue is thoroughly dry.
