To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigarette- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cigarette boxes, and relates more particularly to boxes which are made of paper or card board, or, the l1ke, though not limited to this material.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a cigarette box in which a holder for the cigarettes, independent of the box proper or the lid is provided, which holder will, upon opening of the box present the cigarettes in such position as to allow 1nstantaneous and easy removal of the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide a box in which the closing movement will automatically effect housing of the cigarettes, similar to the automatic positioning of the cigarettes for easy removal upon opening of the box.

Further, the invention aims to provide a structure of this type which is of simple and economical structure, permitting its adoption by manufacturers to take the place of the customary or common type of box with hinged lid.

Other and further objects of the invention will be later herein set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box when closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the box when in open position. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a detail plan view of the combined means for hingedly connecting the box and its cover and for supporting the holder so as to provide proper positioning of the latter, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the combined hinging and holder supporting and operating means.

The invention includes a box 1 with the customary lid 2 and a cigarette holder 3 of a length so that when the cigarettes are seated on the bottom thereof their tops will extend above the top of the holder, permitting easy removal of the cigarettes.

A member formed preferably of cardboard having a top 4. slitted longitudinally at 5 13 provided to support the holder 3. The top 5 has sides 6 which diverge and are provided with inturned feet or bases 7, the latter being secured to the inner faces of the box and its lid as depicted in Fig. 2. The sides 6 are scored at 8 to permit the sldes to move or fold into the position shown 1n Fig. 3, upon closing of the box and to occupy the position of Fig. 2 upon opening of the box.

For the purpose of hingedly connecting the box and its lid or cover, strips of gauze 9 or the like are employed these strips being passed through the slit 5 and pasted at one end down onto the top 4;, the other ends of the strips being pasted onto the ends of the box and its lid as depicted at 10.

The top 4: when the box is in open position extends over and across the edges of the adjacent ends of the box and lid as shown in Fig. 2 supporting the holder 3 at right angles to the plane in which the opened box and lid extend in, and since the sides 6 are connected to the box and lid it will be apparent that regardless of whether the lid or box is moved one away from the other, the holder will be moved to such right angular position, positioning the cigarettes for easy and convenient removal. Similarly when the box and lid are closed, the base of the holder extends with top 4 across the ends of the box and lid.
