To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAnUnL Konsranrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hats equipped with eye-shields supported to be adjusted into and out of a position in which they oppose the eyes of the wearer, hats off this type being used more particularly in automobiling; and my primary object, generally stated, is to provide a novel, simple and economical construction of the character above stated, which will present a neat appearance, and the shield-forming sections of which may be easily and quickly adjusted into and out of operative position.

The particular kind of hat by which I have chosen to illustrate my invention is adapted for ladies wear and, as usual in this kind ofhat, has its hat-band formed with an elastic section 4: at the rear portion of the hat to which the shirred, or gathered, section 5 of the covering 6 of the hat, and the adjacent portion of the lining 7 of the hat, is secured.

The hat is provided with a vizor 8 con nected with the lower edges of the covering 6, through the meoiuin of the clothsections 9, and with the lining 7 and at its rear ends with the ends of the elastic section referred to, as shown in Fig. 4E.

The shield-forming sections are illustrated at 10 and, by preference, each is formed of a sheet 11 of transparent material, such as celluloid, of a color, such as amber, to soften the light, bound around its edges with cloth bindings 12 which may be sewed thereto and be formed of a strip of cloth folded upon itself to overlap the edges of the sheet 11. The sections 10 fiatwise oppose the underside of the vizor 8 and are arranged at opposite sides of the median line of the hat, as represented in Fig. 1, in which position they project forwardly, as shown in full lines in this figure, and are secured to the hat as by stitching them to the visor, as by the stitching 13, which passes through the folded portions of the bindings 12, along their inner edges and extends closeto the inner edges of the sheets 11, as represented, the lines of stitching 13 conforming to the rear curved edges of the sections 11. By thus securing the sections 10 in place they are caused to normally pro ject forward, in substantially flatwise opposed relation to the underside of thevizor 8 and in a plane above the eyes of the wearer, but may be readily moved against the tendency to remain in raised position, to depending position shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein they oppose the eyes of the wearer and are releasably held in such position by any suitable means, as hereinafter described, the sections 10, when the last-referred-to means are released, springing back to normal raised position.

While it is preferred that the sections 10 be constructed and secured to the hat as stated, this is not an essential of my invention, as they may be of any other desirable construction and be secured to the hat in other ways, preferably, however, to cause them to normally extend forwardly close to the underside of the vizor and be movable downwardly to operative position against the tendency to remain in normal position.

In the construction shown, the sections 10 are so arranged that when moved to depending position they willcross at their adja cent edge-portions, as shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, in which position they are, by preference, releasably secured to gether by means on the sections, as, for example, by the ball andsocket fastener, the cooperative parts of which are represented at 14 and 15.

lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hat, with sections of transparent material supported thereon and movable from means engaging adjacent portions of said sections for releasably securing the latter in depending position.

2. A hat, with sections of transparent material supported thereon to be movable from a position in which they extend forwardly from the front part of the hat, to depending position in which they oppose the eyes of the wearer, means for causing said sections to normally extend forwardly from the front portion of the hat and to resist the movement of said sections throughout their movement to depending position, and means engaging adjacent portions of said sections for releasably securing the latter in depending position against the action of said firstnamed means.

3. A hat, with sections of transparent material supported thereon and movable from a position in which they extend forwardly from the front portion of the hat to depending position in which they oppose the eyes of the person wearing the hat, and overlap each other at adjacent marginal edges, and means for releasably securing said sections together in said position.

i. A hat, with sections of transparent material supported thereon to be movable from a position in which they extend forwardly from the front part of the hat, to depending position in which they oppose the eyes of the wearer, means for causing said sections to normally extend forwardly from the front portion of the hat and to resist the movement of said sections throughout their movement to depending position and overlapping each other at adjacent marginal edges, and means for releasably securing said sections together in said position.

5. A hat having a vizor with sections of transparent material secured at their rear edges flatwise against the under surface of said vizor, to be movable from a position in which they extend forwardly from the front portion of the hat to depending position in which they oppose the eyes of the wearer, means for causing said sections to normally extend forwardly from the front portion of the hat and to resist the movement of said sections throughout their movement to depending position, and means for releasably securing said sections in said last referred to position.

6. A hat having a vizor with eye-shields each formed of a section of transparent material having a binding around its margin, said eye-shields lying flatwise against the under surface of the vizor and secured in this position each at one end by stitching extending along curved lines and passing through the binding close to the adjacent edges of said sections of transparent material, whereby said eye-shields may be moved downwardly at their forward ends to become positioned opposite the eyes of the wearer, and means for releasably securing said eye-shields in the last referred to position against springing back into normal position.
