Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MoBnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Athens, county of Athens, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sectional Posts for Loose- Leaf Files, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a loose leaf file the two covers being joined by sectional posts countersunk in the covers, the construction of the posts being such that the file will be adapted to securely clamp and bind any number of leaves the only limitation being the number of sections used.

My invention consists of certain details of construction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I shows a longitudinal sectional view of a volume fitted out with my device. Fig. II shows a similar view, the volume having only a few sheets of paper therein, and Figs. III, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII, show detail views of their respective parts of my sectional post. 1

Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference numeral 10 is used to'indicate the lower cover of my device and the numeral 11 the upper cover,'each provided with a flexible hinge, as shown. In that part of the covers to the rear of the hinge I have secured a metal strip, lfl'and 18 respectively, the strip in the lower cover being provided with two, or more screw threaded orifices and the strip in the upper cover being provided with mating orifices therefor. On the outer surface of each strip I have secured other strips, preferably of paste board, 14 and 15 respectively, each being secured to its respective metal strip by cloth binding which also forms the flexible hinge, as clearly shown in the drawings. Obviously each paste board strip and its cloth binding is orificed to mate their respective orifices in the metal strips, the orifices in the paste board and cloth binding, however, being of greater diameter than the orifices in their respective strips for the purpose of countersinking the heads of the sectional posts so that the metal can not come into contact with a desk on which my binder may be lying.

inner sections mating togetherand suitable heads provided therefor. The outer sections, designated by the numerals 16 are similar to each other each being internally screw threaded and the inner sections, desig nated by the numeral 17 are likewise similar to each other land are externally screwthreaded to engage and mate with the in ternal screw threads on the outer sections 16. I also provide two sets of suitable heads,

one set, 18, having externally screw threaded shafts of different lengths, and the other set 19, having internally screw threaded shafts of different lengths.

The manner of building my posts, section by section is as follows: Two of the heads, with their shafts externally screw threaded, are secured in their respective screw threaded orifices in the'lower cover, their heads being countersunk (from the construction hereinbefore described), and their shafts extending upwardly above the cover. If only a few sheets of paper are to be secured they are fitted over the shafts in the ordinary manner and the top cover placed in position and two of the heads with internally screw threaded shafts pro- .jected through their respective orifices in the top cover and screwed onto their re spective projecting shafts in the lower cover. The object of providing heads with difierent length shafts is to provide a proper length for countersinking the head 7 in the cover regardless of the thickness of the volume. As the volume grows in thick ness the sections are secured to each other, obviously the externally screw threaded and internally screw threaded sections alternating, in the manner shown.

Through each of the sections I have provided two transverse orifices designed to receive a rod which will be found of great assistance in loosening or tightening the,

screw shaft sections.

My device may be used for loose leaf files which can be also permanent and either orificed or slotted leaves may be used. By the construction shown and described any number of leaves, from one up, can be securely held in position.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
